"Only Flesh" by Mary Prevost

Please, be careful
you hold my heart
in your hands.
I have given it to you
freely, nothing attached,
so you can ascertain
the whole of me.
It is o.k. if you give it back,
it has been slightly used.
It will only be an organ then,
beating a solo rhythm
within me, echoing
in the well of my soul.
I have not the strength
to refuse you the keeping
or the returning of it.
It is yours to do what you will
but be gentle for I am only flesh
and I bleed.
