"Flashy Comet" by Mary Prevost

You slipped into this world
when my back was turned
on that cold April morning.
The comet had set,
that far flash in the sky
which streaked the heavens
as I sat impatiently waiting
all night with the smell of hay
tickling my nose and frost
nipping my fingers and toes.
I missed seeing your tiny
white feet and pink nose
that kissed the morning air,
missed your first steps
of stumbling gracefulness
toward that first drink of life.
With four white stockings,
a strip, a nip and a blaze
with it’s curved cheeky tail,
the sign of your birth, the mark
of your blazing celestial twin,
out of the blackness of the night
and into the bright morning light,
a flash of life that now streaks
across the earth on four white legs,
your blaze a sweeping arc,
my star from the heavens,
a breathtaking sight of fluid
motion, powerful muscles
propelling you through space,
your every step from your first
moment on has touched me
with your bright spirit.
My Flashy Comet, with a blazing
tail streaking across your face
that has left it’s mark in my heart,
a trailing after image of love.
