Chapter 1: Ryan's Dream
"Ryan!"
Stride.... and jump! I soared high over the log, and landed perfectly, then patted the horse underneath me, the perfect horse. My horse.
"Ryan! Wake up!"
I sat striaght up in my bed, and rubed my eyes a few times before the form of my brother came into clear view. "Breakfast."
I groaned, and got out of bed. I walked downstairs past the bathroom, to the hallway and into the dining room.
"Mornin' Ryan. Took Seth a few tries to get you up. We're having pancakes for breakfast, and I know how much you hate cold pancakes."
I grined. My mom is so cool, even for a mom, I mean. She never made me eat cold pancakes. After she and dad divorced, she promised we'd move out to her father's farm, and we did. She even promised me a horse for my birthday! My birthday was in four more days.
"Thanks mom."
I sat down at my normal place at the table. Seth was already eating. "I really admire your table manners, maybe you could tutor me sometime."
Seth rolled his eyes at my sarcasme. "So mom, when are we going to look at the stallions?"
I asked, overly hyper. I love horses, and since we moved to my grandfather's farm, we made a deal that if he let us start our own stud services, we'd pay him a monthly fee, since it is his land, and his property. So, we agreed, and today we were going to look at a few retired racing studs.
"Around noon."
"Noon? But thats hours away!"
My mom grined. She loves horses just as much as I do. "Yes, but I need to take a shower, talk to your grandfather, and do a few other things around the new stables before we can go. Why don't you go play with Rachel?"
Rachel is my best friend. She has her own farm, and two of her own horses! Well, her stallion was sick, and they had to put him down. So she got to pick one of the Tripple Crown Winning stallions at stud to breed her mare to. So now she had a mare, and a foal on the way. So, I finished breakfast, and ran outside.
"Hi grandpa! Coming over to talk to mom?"
"Yessirie. You excited about going to see those studs?"
"You betcha!"
Grandpa smiled, and walked into the house as I hoped on my bike, and petaled as fast as I could to Rachel's house.
"Rachel!" I yelled as I skidded to a hault her driveway. She was running into the stable with a blanket.
"Hurry up Ryan! Betcha's having contractions!"
Betcha was Rachel's mare. Her full name is Betchagonnaluvme, Betcha for short.
I dropped my bike in the driveway, and ran into the stable after Rachel.
Rachel and I skidded to a hault as we neared Betcha's stall. Rachel handed the blanket to her mom, Rachel and I stood outside the stall. Waiting axtiously. After about an hour of waiting, Rachel's mom stood up as Betcha fell asleep. "Like I thought, its too early for the foal to be born, Betcha is probably just nervous. She may be remembering her last foal."
Rachel's mom said, Rachel and I turned our eyes down. Betcha's last foal was a still born, poor Betcha was scared, it was her first foal, so she pushed herself into labor to early. The phone in the stable rang, Rachel and I walked over to answer it as Rachel's mom left the stable and headed up towards the paddocks.
"Its for you Ryan." Rachel said handing me the phone.
I frowned, it was probably my mom telling me we had to wait longer to go look at the stallions.
"Ryan?"
"Yeah?"
"Your grandpa and I are going over to Chuc's farm, one of his mares is stuck, we'll be back around 1ish."
"1? I though you said we could go look at the studs at noon!"
"I'm sorry Ryan, but the mare is in pretty bad shape. Just be glad your grandpa is alowing this. I'll see you later. Oh, Seth is coming with us. Bye."
"Bye."
I hung up the phone and looked over at Rachel.
"Come on, lets go riding! It'll take your mind of the studs."
I had to crack a smile.
"Alright."
We tacked up Death Defying, and Bulldog, two of Rachel's stallions.
DD was a gorgous black stallion. Pure black to, no star, or blaze or anything! Bulldog was white with a grey mane and muzzle. Both of them were the nicest and sweetest stallions around.
After we'd saddled them up, we walked them out to the course and tied them to the fence while we set up the jumping poles.
After that, Rachel and I took turns jumping the stallions and running them in circles before jumping back over. After we'd had our fun, we hosed down the stallions -because we had nothing else to do-, and untacked them, then put them in thier stalls. We went inside Rachel's house and got some water, I looked at my watch.
"Its just now 12:30. Thirty minutes until my mom is supossed to get back.. I really want to look at those studs!"
Rachel grinned, we walked outside.
"Well, I guess I better get home then, so I don't have to wait any longer! Bye Rachel, I'll call you when we get back."
"Bye, and have fun Ryan."
I got on my bike, and rode towards my house.
I got home just as Mom pulled into the driveway. I parked my bike, and waved, she beeped the horn.
"C'mon kiddo, we should get going if you want to see the Studs before dinner."
"Yes!" I ran to the front of my mom's blue truck, and climbed in. Seth looked over at me.
"I get the window seat." He muttered, and climbed out.
"Fine, fine." I sat beside mom, and Seth climbed in, closing the door behind him.
"So, what was with the mare?" I asked as mom drove out of our drive-way.
"She got herself tangled pretty bad in some barbed wire." She took a napkin from the glove compartment, and tried to wipe off some of the dried blood. From the mare, I assumed.
