Little is known of Mary Eliot's early life. The American Heritage Magazine of History, Vol. IX, No. 1, pages 40 and 117, gives an account of the life of her brother, John Eliot in an article by Francis Russell, "Apostle to the Indians", in which the above biographical information is given. From the article: "At the customary age of 14, he entered Jesus College, Cambridge, taking his B.A. degree in 1622. He then became an usher in the Rev. Thomas Hocker's school at Little Baddow. Hooker, a Puritan of the milder sort, fled to Holland; Eliot followed him. On arrival in New England, Eliot was probably the first New England minister to take orders in the Congregational manner." The date of Eliot's arrival in Boston is not mentioned, but a year after he had taken orders, "Ann Mumford, his bride-to-be, came to join him."  (It is possible that John Eliot's sister, Mary, may have traveled to Boston with her.) John Eliot established his church at Roxbury in 1632, and it may have been here that his sister, Mary, was married to Edward Payson, ten years later, and where their son, John Payson was born.
