Generation No. 1

1.  FREDERICK1 STEIGMEYER1 was born 12 Nov 1808 in Oberendingen, Switzerland1, and died 02 Jun 18981.  He married ELIZABETH SENN1 10 Apr 1837 in Switzerland2, daughter of JOHANNES SENN and NOTHBURGA SCHIFFERLE.  She was born 16 Dec 1812 in Switzerland3, and died 30 Dec 18913.

Frederick Steigmeyer was born in Oberendingen Seitzerland November 12, 1808.  He came to America in August of 1831.  His first American home was in Allentown, Pennsylvania.  Here he and his parents worked at the carpenter trade.  He returned to Switzerland where he courted and won the heart of Elizabeth Senn and they were married early in the Spring of 1837.  He and his brother John Steigmeyer had already established land claims at Attica in Seneca County, Ohio, so he and his wife came at once by sailing vessel and canal boat to Sandusky City, Ohio.  Because they had little in the way of worldly goods to carry they walked the twenty nine miles from Sandusky to Attica.  Frederick's eighty acre farm was covered with timber and it needed a house and other buildings.  Federick started housekeeping with another Sweiss emigrant who had been in America for some years.  This man (Jack Meyer) furnished his quarters and from here he worked as a carpenter building barns and houses for the early settlers.  In those days the timbers were felled and squared by hand tools, mortised and fitted together so that on a "grand raising day" neighbors came from far and wide and helped put these timbers together and raise them into a framework for the new house or barn.  Frederick could "lay this work out" and was considered a master workman.  He taught his wife's brother Johannes Baptist Senn the trade when he arrived at Attica in 1838.
     In erecting these farm buildings he earned enough money to build his own log cabin on the eighty acres he had purchased from the government the year before.  His farming was profitable and in 1841 he purchased the Metcalf (now Heabler - 1960) mill site.  It had just been destroyed by fire.  the water power was small and he could only operate the saw mill on a limited basis.  He conceived the idea of installing a burr to grind grain.  There was not enough powe for both so he arranged "to saw all day and grind flour and feed all night."  In 1847 he sold out and with the profit and the money he had saved he bought the large farm east of Attica known as the John and May Steigmeyer farm.  In 1864 he purchased the farm adjacent to this and added it to his holdings.
     Frederick and Elizabeth lived to celebrate their "golden wedding." In the midst of great festivity each became the recipients of a pair of gold rimmed spectacles.  The news story said, "they found them under their plates."  It is an old Swiss custom to cross the knife and fork and then turn the plate over them.  After the grace each person then "turned his plate over" and placed his knife and fork beside it.  They were indeed surprised to find the spectacles there with their knife and fork. The news clipping said that everyone well remembers Frederick's farm as "a model of neatness and exactness."  It said further, "He was always interested in and always endeavoring to learn.  From every standpoint he was always a good citizen, and this is the very highest compliment American neighbors can pay their dead."
     Victoria Buchman-Abbott, his granddaughter, says of him, "He was a devout memeber of his church and together with others formed the Attica Catholic Society and it was he who erected the church building doing the work with his hands and charging nothing for it."  That building still stands as a part of the present structure.  Victoria also said, "Well do I remember little grandmother Elizabeth Senn-Steigmeyer with her soft spoken manner.  One was scarcely in her home before she came with a plate of her homecade cookies or cakes and a glass of something to drink.
     To Victoria goes credit for having saved the news clippings of the time and it is through these that we have been able to measure the "heresay traditions."

John Steigmeyer was the oldest son of the family and it was he who took over the home farm when his father decided to retire.  John had a reputation of being one of the most progressive farmers in the township. He and Mary were always looking for something new in the way of crop planning and rotation.  Their livestock always brought top prices.  John was raised a Roman Catholic but the priests of that day who served the community of Attica were not in sympathy with founding of the Patrons of Husbandry (Grange) which was very strong around Attica.  John wanted to belong to this and the priest frowned upon hi s request to belong because it was a "secret society."  He therefore decided to renounce the religion of his parents and join this society.  He then married a protestant and became a member of one of the most liberal of the protestant churches of the village and remained a faithful and strongly supporting member of his church until the time of his death.

    Elizabeth Steigmeyer-Buchman was the daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth Senn-Steigmeyer, early settlers in the eastern part of Seneca County who came from Switzerland.  She was born near Attica, Seneca County, Ohio on 10-30-1842 and was educated in the township schools.  As was the custom of the time she helped her parents in everything in which they were engaged.  Her father was a farmer , carpenter, and cabinet maker and was called to make caskets for may of the pioneers when they departed this life.  Elizabeth worked with her father and helped line and pad them, so they might appear more restful.  On April 12, 1858 she was married to John Buchman, the son of John Buchman, Sr who had come to America with the Steigmeyer party in 1837.  They at once moved to a farm southwest of Tiffin where they lived for a period of nearly 30 years.  In 1887 they moved to their farm three miles south of Tiffin where Mr Buchman passed away on October 8, 1897.  She later moved to Tiffin where she continued to reside until her death.  She was the mother of fourteen children and was an estimable Christian woman whose long life was one of useful activity and devotion to her family and her church of which she was a devout member.  Her neighbors and friends said that her daily life was a practical example of her faith.

{ From old clippings and memories of tradition furnished by Victoria Buchmann-Abbott, the youngest daughter of the family }

     John Buchman was born in Dottingen, Switzerland September 29, 1827 and was nine years of age when he came to America with the Steigmeyer party.  Little did he realize that he would become the son-in-law of Frederick and Elizabeth Senn-Steigmeyer by marrying their yet unborn daughter in later years.  His family settled on a farm near Republic Ohio where he worked until he became of age.  He now left home to go to the Republic Academy for a period of two years.  To pay expenses he worked in a doctor's office and clerked in a grocery.  In 1850 at the age of 23 he formed a partnership with a Mr MacConnegy.  They bought wagons, horses, seed, stock, and farming implements.  They organized a party of 25 men and set out for California in search for gold.  In this party was David H Meyer, the son of Jacob Meyer whose bank barn was built by Frederick Steigmeyer whose daughter, Elizabeth, married John after he returned from California.  It was David's sister, Louisa who married the youngest brother of Frederick's wife, Elizabeth Senn-Steigmeyer, Sebastian Senn. The journey across the plains and through the mountain passes was typical of the day.  They were accosted by Indians and lost some of their stock, and suffered numerous privations.  The journey took 3 months and they were the last party to get through the illfated Donner Pass before it was snowed in for the winter.  They took up government land in the Sacramento Valley near Sacramento and established a combined farm, dairy, and trading post.  They operated a pack train to furnish miners with food and necessities and took their surplus to market.  Flour sold for $100.00 a barrel and shipping costs amounted to $2.00 a pound.  Late in 1856 he returned by way of the Isthmus of Panama and boat to New York and Philadelphia where he had his gold bullion coined.  He returned to Tiffin where he bought a 160 acre farm west of the city which he owned the rest of his life.  On April 12, 1858 he married Elizabeth Steigmeyer, the second child of Frederick and Elizabeth Senn-Steigmeyer.  The bride was not yet 16 years of age, while her husband was thirty.  they lived on the 160 acres for 30 years.  John had intended to return to California after his family had well started so he would have help of his own, but when Leander and Zeno, his promising sons, passed away he gave up the long cherished hope and bought another farm south of Tiffin.  In 1887 they moved to this farm where a large house and other buildings were built. Here he passed away October 8, 1897 due to heart failure.  John never retired and was always active.  He was a good provider and a devout member of his church.

Fred started life as a farmer along with his brother John.  He was considered to be avery good one.  Early in life he became interested in the "Grange," but the priest of the parish to which he belonged, did not like to have his members to be interested in "secret societes" and so refused to sanction membership.  Fred and his brother John left the church, married protestant wives and became active in a liberal protestant church.  So keen were they in this that they contributed heavily toward the  establishment of Buchtel College of Akron, Ohio, which was gostered by this church.  While in attendance there, their daughter Lulu was burned to death in a girls dorm fire during a holiday party. Fred had interest in the development of the Dakotas when they were open to settlement, and if one goes to Pierre, South Dakota he will still find the Steigmeyer addition in which the streets are named SENECA, ATTICA, VENICE, etc, named after his home community in Seneca County, Ohio.

By Carl M Senn:  (approx 1960)  This writer of this family tree recalls visiting Frank in his home in beverly Hills, California and of enjoying that visit to the highest.  He found that over the years "time" had developed the SENN features in Frank.  He wal almost an axact copy of my own father, John Sebastian Senn.  His nose, his rounded face, his general personality traits all made me think of my own father.  At this ime he reviewed his close association with Dr Nicholas Senn, the famous Chicago surgeon of the turn of the last century.  He stated that together they traced a common lineage which put the famous surgeon as a first cousin of his grandfather Johannes Michael Senn. It is true that they came from quite close areas of Switzerland.  This being the case, we know that this family is then related to the famous pediatrician, Dr Milton J E Senn of Yale University for he is a nephew of Dr Nicholas Senn.
He was known as "Steig" by all of his associates after college days.  He was born in Attica, Seneca County, Ohio and was immensely proud of his early boyhood experiences at home and on the ranches of his father in the Dakotas.  He boasted of his Seiss ancestry.  In his youth he was considered as one of the "livest of the live wires."  His family always knew the "right people" and consequently Steig won a coveted appointment to West Point Military Academy.  Because of his mother's serious illness he was obliged to resign. After her recovery he decidedto enter Chicago University.  Here he earned both the Bachelor and Master of Arts Degrees.  Law was not taught at the university at that tiem so he entered the Chicago College of law from which he graduated with honors.  He was an outstanding athlete from his early youth.  He earned a number of silver cups for his prowess during his academy and dollege days, and he treasured them all his lifetime.  On the track team he excelled in the high jump and his ability on the gridiron attracted the interest of Alonzo Stag who was the varsity coach.  From that tiem on Steig was one of Staggs boys.  This friendship lasted throughout their lives.  He belonged to Sigma Chi fraternity and managed and led the glee club of the University of Chicago.
A "WHO-IS-WHO" record left in his effects said, (quote) "His most famous relative on his paternal side was Dr Nicholas Senn, president of Rush Medical College, and Surgeon General of the US Army.  He and Dr Senn became very close friends during this college period in Chicago.  On the maternal side of the family the ancestry traces back to Dutch English background of the perios of 1642 and his is proud to note that martin Van Buren is a lineal descendent from the same family line.  Through this ancestry he was eligible for "Sons of the American Revolution" and for the "Huginot Society."  After completing college he began to practice law under Judge Thomas Moran of  Chicago and after the Spanish American War he went to southwestern Colorado where he continued to practice law and embarked on his gold mining career.  In 1900 he began to specialize in his law, making it relative to economic development of safer basins and water power.  He worked at first on Madison River, Montana and Bear Lake, Idaho projects.  He now formed a partnership with Judge Story, a great grandson of Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story.  This partnership lasted until the death of the judge twenty years later.  His firm was retained by the outstanding exploring and developing companies of both the USA and the British Empire.  Mr Steigmeyer was always "The Man In The Boots" in pioneer work wherever his firm operated.  In 1916 he transferred his partnership to California and opened up offices specializing in titles, realty improvement, and investments.  Mr Steigmeyer has numerous references as to alertness, integrity, ability, and dependability." (End of Who-Is-Who quote)
     In California he lived at 624 North Crescent Drive in Beverly Hills no far from the late Will Rogers.  Of Steig, his wife Lu Ree Dyer says, "I met him when I was visiting Judge Moran's daughter, Marge, while Steig was visiting Jack, one of the eight sons and daughters of the judge.  He was very handsome, six feet tall, with dark curly hair, grey eyes, and a distinct Swiss nose.  He was tender, devoted, and loving as a husband. When we lost our little boy it seemed to make us closer and more companionable since we hod only each other.  He was always charming, full of fun, and a great tease.  He was always a leader in everything he ever undertook.  He died as he would have liked to have died, for he was up in his gold mining property in the mountains of Nevada.  He had tramped all day over the hills showing his men what he wanted them to do in his absence.  That night he "fell asleep" never to awaken due to a ruptured aorta.  Now that I have adjusted to his dying and leaving me, I am glad that he was never ill nor feeble and was always alert.  I have said very little about this most versatile man I have loved all these years."

In response to an inquiry about herself, Lu Ree Dyer-Steigmeyer says, " I am eighty three years of age and live here alone with a Japanese maid.  I managemy own affairs with thehelp of the same accountant, WF Warnock, that Steig had.  I drive my own car and fly east to Washington each Christmas to visist my sister.  My father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all born in Georgetown, DC.  The family came to Maryland at the time it was settled by Lord Baltimore.  I was educated at Visitation Convent, Georgetown DC and the Convent du Saint Sacrament of Paris France.

"Friede" as she is called by her friends, was named after her two grandmothers, Friederike Englehart and Mary Sieger-Steigmeyer.  Both she and Don graduated from Attica HS.  Friede continued her education in music and graduated from the Arnold School of Music at Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio.  She then taught piano for several years.  Her music talent was always displayed in the music department of her church.  One of the outstanding functions of this department was the presentation of the annual Christmas Cantata, which was always taken to the village "Opera House" in order to accommodate all who wished to hear it.  Friede was always in the midst of this event.  After her marriage she and her husband moved to bucyrus, Ohio where he went into business.  Here they became members of the Presbyterian church.  Years later we wtill find her heading the Board of deaconesses and in charge of all new members of the church.  Friede is a member of two literary clubs and has been president of both.  She also has served as president of the PTA during the time her two daughters were in school.  She has always been active in the work of the Red Cross and is presently chairman of the Motor Corps of the Bloodmobile.  She is an active member of the Eastern Stars and her husband was as keenly interested in Masonry.  She is the representative of Dunn and Bradstreet in the Northern Ohio territory where hse handles their confidential research.
