Notes for TEWDRIG AP BUDIC:

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pg. 125.]

[EA9;SA9] TEWDRIG Gwent (and later Glywysing), fl 550s-c584.
The name Theodoric (and its Celtic equivalent Tewdrig) were popular in the sixth century and this blurs identification of some individuals. This Tewdrig may have been the son (or grandson) of TEITHFALLT, who ruled Gwent at the end of the fifth century, or he may have been the son of Budic, a Celtic ruler of Brittany, who was exelled after the death of his father (in 556) and returned to Wales, where he had spent much of his youth engaged in aiding the British in their battles against the Irish in both Wales and Cornwall. Whichever the case, he ascended the throne with considerable prestige gained from his youthful valour. He built upon that prestige by marrying Enhinti, the sister of URIEN of Rheged, who was already becoming regarded as the most powerful British king. Tewdrig continued his exploits in Wales and Cornwall, and through his actions firmly established Gwent as the most powerful nation in south Wales, driving back the Irish of Demetia and increasing the territory of Glywysing. Towards the end of his long life he retired to become an anchorite, apparently living in a cave or cell near Tintern. However, he emerged a few years later to help his son, MEURIG, in an offensive against the Saxons who were making great advances around Gloucester. The Saxon annals record a Saxon withdrawal from the Wye around the year 584, and this may be the year of Tewdrig's death. He was mortally wounded in battle and died three days later. He ordered that he be buried where he died and a church established there. The traditional burial place is Mathern, near Chepstow.

Cause of Death: Abdicated but killed in battle9

Reign: 550, Ruler of Gwent9

Notes for MEURIG AP TEWDRIG:

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pg. 125.]

[EA10] MEURIG AP TEWDRIG Gwent and Glywysing, c580-c615.
Meurig was the name of three kings of Gwent and surrounding territories. The name is the same as the French Maurice and tends to refer to someone who is dark- skinned, like the Moors. The first of that name became ruler of Gwent when his father, TEWDRIG, retired to become an anchorite. However, both father and son led a Welsh army against the Saxons and soundly defeated them at Tintern around the year 584 (see CEAWLIN and CUTHA). Tewdrig had had a dream that if he fought alongside his son they would have a victory which would result in peace for thirty years. Meurig was also the answer to St CADOC's prayers, since he wished to hand the rulership of Glywysing over to someone more able than he. Meurig thus became the first ruler of a combined Gwent and Glywysing, which were the equivalent of modern Glamorgan and formed the later kingdom of Morgannwg. Meurig's power grew. He married into the royal family of Gower and subsumed that kingdom into his own. The last king of Ergyng, GWRFODDW, died during Meurig's reign, and that kingdom became part of Glywysing. He also overthrew, once and for all, the domination of the Irish kingdom of Demetia, and it is possible that he installed his own son, ARTHWYR, as their ruler. Tewdrig's dream of a peaceful reign had translated into one where Meurig suffered no oppression, but dominated others. He was almost certainly an impulsive man with a strong temper. A deed exists whereby Meurig paid atonement for killing CYNFEDDW.

Reign: Bet. 580 - 615, Ruler of Gwent and Glywysing15

Notes for ARTHWYR AP MEURIG:

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pg. 126.]

[EA12] ARTHWYR Gwent (?), fl 620s.
On the death of his father, MEURIG AP TEWDRIG, Arthwyr appears to have inherited the sub-kingdom of Gwent. Considering the fame attached to both his father and grandfather, and which would also be attached to his son MORGAN "MWYNFAWR", it is surprising that so little is recorded about Arthwyr beyond a few grants of land. Some historians are not even sure that he actually reigned. However, because of his name, others have claimed that this is the fabled King ARTHUR, though it is extremely unlikely that this Arthwyr could claim such noble and valorous deeds. Such were more likely to apply to his namesake, ARTHWYR of Dyfed. It is possible but unlikely that the two Arthwyrs are one and the same (even though their genealogies differ) and that he was installed as ruler of that kingdom after his father defeated the Demetian ruler PEDR. If they are the same, then Arthwyr may be accorded greater glory, as he would have ruled all of southern Wales from Dyfed to Gwent and would be remembered in legend for driving out the Irish and holding the Saxons at bay.

Reign: Bet. 615 - 630, Ruler of Gwent19

Notes for MORGAN AP ARTHWYR:

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pg. 126.]

[EA13] MORGAN "MWYNFAWR" Ap ARTHWYR Gwent and Glywysing, c630-c665.
His nickname means "the Generous", but this must have been earned late in life, for all the evidence of his reign is of a ruthless and calculating ruler. It is possible that in the first half of his reign Morgan combined forces with ARTGLYS of Ceredigion in an effort to overthrow Dyfed (see under GWLYDDIEN). Morgan was also locked in a power struggle with his uncle Frioc, who probably inherited parts of Gwent from MEURIG AP TEWDRIG. Morgan and Frioc swore an oath before the Bishop of Llandaff that they should each keep the peace and that should one kill the other they must resign their kingdom and become a pilgrim. In due course Morgan did kill Frioc, probably in battle. The Welsh annals record "slaughter in Gwent" in the year 649. Morgan was tried and judged by the elders of Glamorgan. Because the kingdom was then under considerable threat they agreed that Morgan should remain king, provided he paid atonement. Thereafter Morgan became very generous to the church for the good of his soul. The threat to the British was from CENWEALH of Wessex, who was expanding his territory west into Dumnonia and threatening the borders of Gwent, where the Mercian kingdom was also becoming established. The area around the Cotswolds became a cauldron of activity for the next twenty years, and Morgan almost certainly sided with the Mercians against the West Saxons. However, it was the West Saxons who made the gains. In the year 665 the Annals record the second battle of Badon, and also note that Morgan died that year. It is not clear if he died in that battle, but it is probably. He would, by then, probably have been nearly sixty. After his death there is a gap in the chronology of Gwent, though the records show he was succeeded by his son ITHAEL.

[EA14] ITHAEL AP MORGAN Gwent and Glywysing, c715-c745.
During his reign there was considerable destruction carried out by the Saxons along the Welsh border, which Ithael did his best to check. The power of Gwent, which had increased with each sole powerful king, was fragmented after Ithael's reign by the division between his six sons. The premier rulers were Meurig, RHYS and FFERFAEL.

Reign: Bet. 715 - 745, Ruler of Gwent and Glywysing32

Children of ITHAEL AP MORGAN are:

Notes for FFERNFAEL AP ITHAEL:

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pg. 127.]

[EA15] FFERNFAEL AP ITHAEL Gwent, 745-775.
Ithael's combined territory of Gwent and Glywysing was divided amongst his sons. Ffernfael became ruler of Gwent, which was ruled by his descendants for the next two generations, whilst his brothers RHYS, Meurig and Rhodri shared Glywysing. The hostilities previously recorded on the Welsh border had halted during Ffernfael's day, probably because of the civil war that had broken out within Mercia and its continued rivalry with Wessex. Ffernfael was succeeded by his son ARTHWYR.

Reign: Bet. 745 - 775, Ruler of Gwent36

Notes for RHYS AP ITHAEL:

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pg. 127.]

[EA16] RHYS AB ITHAEL Glywysing, 745-?
Rhys apparently ruled Glywysing jointly with his brothers Meurig and Rhodri, although the presence of charters bearing solely Rhys's name suggests that he was the senior ruler. It is not clear when he died, and the chronology of Glamorgan at this period is uncertain. It is possible that Rhys was ruling toward the end of the eighth century. He was succeeded by his son ARTHFAEL.

Reign: Bet. 745 - 800, Ruler of Glywysing38

Notes for ARTHWYR AP FFERNFAEL:

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pg. 127.]

[EA17] ARTHWYR AP FFERNFAEL Gwent, 775-?
Records of activities in Gwent at this time are few, but Arthwyr was almost certainly the ruler at the time of the construction of Offa's Dyke. His lands and those of BROCHFAEL AP ELISEDD of Powys probably provided the majority of the labour, but exactly how the building of this Dyke was organized is still uncertain. One has to conclude that Arthwyr, Brochael and Offa's administrators were able to work closely together for each other's mutual benefit. Arthwyr was succeeded by his son ITHAEL.

Reign: Bet. 775 - 800, Ruler of Gwent42

[EA19] ITHAEL AB ARTHWYR Gwent, fl 830s and died in 848.
He was the last of the line of FFERNFAEL AP ITHAEL, and after his death the throne of Gwent passed to Meurig ab Arthfael and his sons BROCHWAEL and FFERNWAEL.

Reign: Bet. 830 - 848, Ruler of Gwent45

Notes for ARTHFAEL AP RHYS:

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pg. 127.]

[EA18] ARTHFAEL AP RHYS Glywysing, fl 800.
By the time of Arthfael, Glywysing had been subdivided amongst many brothers and cousins so that each was ruling only a relatively small cantref of land. Although Arthfael tends to be identified as the senior king, it is unlikely that he had much authority over his brothers Hywel and Brodhfael, his nephews Brochwael and Gwriad, his cousins Tewdwr, Gwrgan and Meurig, and his uncles Meurig and Rhodri, all of whom seem to have been ruling at about this same time, in addition to his cousin ARTHWYR in neighbouring Gwent. This partible succession continued under his sons Meurig and Rhys, both of whom ruled around the 830s-840s. It was not until the time of Rhys's son, HYWEL, that Glywysing began to recover some of its former status.

Notes for MEURIG AP ARTHFAEL:

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pg. 127.]

[EA20] MEURIG AB ARTHFAEL Gwent, fl 830s.
[EA21] RHYS AB ARTHFAEL Gwent, fl 830s.
These two brothers ruled jointly. Little is recorded of their reign, though it seems certain that the division of territory amongst sons and cousins may have seriously weakened Gwent's status but not its military power and jointly they continued to defend the land against the incursion of Danes and Mercians.

[EA22] BROCHWAEL and FFERNWAEL Gwent, fl 880s.
Two brothers, the sons of Meurig ab Arthfael, who are listed together by Asser in his Life of Alfred, suggesting that they ruled jointly. They probably needed their combined strength as they suffered from conflict on at least two fronts, possibly three. Asser records that they sought the support of ALFRED against the persecution by ATHELRED of Mercia who was hostile to the Welsh and took any opportunity to harry their border. In addition the Danes were driven out of England into Wales in the year 894 and the Annals record that they laid waste to much of Gwent and Glywysing. The rest of Wales was oppressed by ANARAWD and his brothers in Gwynedd, and there is no reason to assume Gwent felt any less vulnerable. The number of documents surviving in the name of Brochwael suggest that he may have been the senior ruler or that he outlived his brother. In later life Brochwael quarrelled with Bishop Cyfeiliog of Llandaff, to the point where Brochwael was threatened with excommunication. The result was that Brochwael condescended to agree to Cyfeiliog's terms and made extensive land grants. Brochwael may have lived into the early 920s.

[EA23] HYWEL AP RHYS Glywysing, c840-885 (may also have ruled Gwent).
There is considerable confusion amongst the chronology and genealogy of the rulers of Glamorgan during the ninth century. Hywel ap Rhys is noted upon the scene in the mid-ninth century, but was of uncertain origin. He was probably the son of RHYS AB ARTHFAEL, and therefore the cousin of BROCHWAEL AB MEURIG of Gwent, but this is far from certain. It seems that early in Hywel's reign there was a dispute over the accession with Gwallen a Ceidrich, whom Hywel eventually slew. For this act Hywel was excommunicated and was forced to do penance by the Bishop of Llandaff. Hywel is one of the kings named by Asser as seeking help from ALFRED "THE GREAT" sometime during the 880s because of oppression from ATHELRED of Mercia. This alliance is always possible (though recent historians have cast doubt on it), not because of internal politics, but because of increasing threats from the Danes. The date of Hywel's death is also uncertain. There is a record of a Hywel ap Rhys who died in rome in 884 or 885 at an improbably great age. However, Hywel's name is also attached to land grants negotiated with Bishop Cyfeiliog of Llandaff in the early tenth century. It is possible, allowing for the uncertainty of the ninth century, that Hywel had a son called Rhys and a grandson who was also Hywel ap Rhys who ruled in Glywysing in the early tenth century, but the latter would have been a minor king.

[EA24] OWAIN AP HYWEL Glywysing, c885-c930.
It is not certain when Owain succeeded his father HYWEL AP RHYS. His reign seems inordinately long for the period although his son, MORGAN, also ruled for over forty years, and Hywel was recorded as living to a remarkable age, so it is possible that Owain was of a long-lived family. He was probably ruler of Glywysing at the time of the Danish onslaught of 896 that devastated much of south-east Wales, and brought Owain into closer association with the West Saxon rulers of England. Owain is also recorded as having submitted to ATHELSTAN in the year 927. Owain has three sons, GRUFFYDD, CADWGAN and Morgan, who initially shared Glywysing but it was reunited by Morgan.

Arthfael succeeded his father HYWEL AP RHYS in the territory of Gwent. He may have ruled as early as 885, and he was certainly alive in the 920s when his name is appended to various grants agreed with Bishop Cyfeiliog. He was probably ruling Gwent at the time of the great Danish raids of 896 and 915 which drove the Welsh into a closer relationship with the West Saxons.

[EA28] CADWGAN AP OWAIN West Glywysing, 930-950.
Cadwgan ruled West Glywysing as his share of his patrimony with his brothers GRUFFYDD and MORGAN. Gruffydd was killed in battle against HYWEL "DDA" of Ceredigion in 934, and Cadwgan and Morgan faced constant conflict against Hywel who extended his domain over Southern Wales. Although Cadwgan attended the court of EADRED in 949, he became involved soon after in a border skirmish with the English in which he was killed. After his death Morgan ruled all of Gwent and Glywysing and in later years the combined kingdom became known as Morgannwg after him.

Notes for MORGAN AP OWAIN:

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pgs. 325-326.]

[EA29] MORGAN AB OWAIN later known as MORGAN "HEN" (THE OLD), ruled 930-74.
Morgan first shared Glywysing with his brothers GRUFFYDD and CADWGAN but, following their deaths he became ruler of all of Glywysing by the year 950. By then he had also absorbed Gwent from his cousin CADELL AP ARTHFAEL who died in 942, making Morgan ruler of all of Morgannwg or Glamorgan. The first decade of Morgan's reign was one of conflict with HYWEL "DDA" of Deheubarth who was intent on consolidating and extending his kingdom, but the two kings subsequently came to respect each other. Each shared an admiration for the English court and would frequently be found attesting charters signed by ATHELSTAN. Morgan continued this relationship after Hywel's death in 950, with EDMUND and EADRED, but it noticeably cooled under Edgar, who regarded himself as ruler of all England, and treated the Welsh princes as vassals. It is not recorded that Morgan was present at Edgar's assembly in Chester in 973 when the rulers of Wales and Scotland paid homage. By then Morgan was in his late seventies or even early eighties, and he died soon after. During the 950s Morgan may have granted rulership of Gwent to NOWY AP GWRIAD. Morgan had five sons, and the rest of his domain was shared amongst them, though the senior ruler appears to have been OWAIN.

[EA31] OWAIN AP MORGAN Glywysing, 974-?
Owain was probably the eldest of MORGAN "HEN's" five sons, and seems to have inherited the major part of his father's domain on Morgan's death in 974. An election of kings is recorded in the year 983 when land was also apportioned to Owain's brothers Idwallon, Cadell and Cynfyn. Glywysing was further apportioned amongst Owain's sons Rhys, Iestyn and HYWEL, which meant that the land had no strong leadership during the troublesome period when it was under threat by the Danes, who raided in strength in 988, and by the rulers of Gwynedd and Deheubarth, who also sought to gain lands in Glamorgan. Throughout Owain's reign there were disputes over the territories of Gower and Brycheiniog.

Hywel inherited part of Glywysing from his father OWAIN AP MORGAN and ruled alongside his brothers Rhys and Iestyn, who pre-deceased him. Hywel's reign was remarkably long considering the constant threats to his rule, both externally, from the Danes, who harried the coast of Wales throughout this period, and from LLYWELYN AP SEISYLL, who reunited Gwynedd and Deheubarth and set out to conquer all of Wales. After Llywelyn's death in 1023, Hywel's nephew, RHYDDERCH AP IESTYN set out on his trail of conquest, taking over Deheubarth and proclaiming himself ruler of all South Wales. Hywel seems to have taken little part in this and one must assume he was forced into the background as a vassal king. Sometime before his death, in 1043, his son MEURIG took over the administration. Some records suggest that Hywel died at the age of 110, which is very unlikely, even allowing for the noted longevity amongst his forebears. He was probably in his eighties.

[EA30] NOWY AP GWRIAD Gwent, fl 950s.
Nowy may have been granted Gwent by MORGAN AB OWAIN sometime after the death of CADELL AP ARTHFAEL in 943, but it is as likely that he took the land by force. Nowy is recorded as murdering Arcoed ap Dissaith about the year 948. Seven years later, in 955, Nowy's kin broke into a church and killed a deacon in revenge for the death of a relative. Evidently Nowy's family had a vicious streak, as Nowy's son, ARTHFAEL, is also recorded as killing his own brother, Elisedd. Nowy's descent is uncertain. It has been suggested he may have been the grandson of CADWGAN AP OWAIN, which would have made him the great nephew of Morgan. Although Morgan lived to a great age, it is unlikely that Cadwgan's grandson could have come into power while his grandfather was still alive in 950, unless he was very young, in which case he would still have been relatively young when he died some time in the 960s or 970s.

He eventually succeeded his father, some time in the 970s, but clearly did not rule long. He was probably murdered by the sons of Elisedd, RHODRI and Gruffydd, who succeeded him in 983.

[EA38] EDWYN AP GWRIAD Gwent, 1015-45.
Edwyn's father bears the same name as NOWY AP GWRIAD's but it is unlikely that the two were brothers, as Edwyn lived up to a century later. In all likelihood Edwyn's father was a grandson of Nowy's father, which would make Gwriad either the brother of cousin or ARTHFAEL AP NOWY. Arthfael had killed his brother Elisedd and Elisedd's sons RHODRI and Gruffydd. The fact that he bore an English name suggests that his father was on good terms with the Saxon rulers, but whether Edwyn was able to continue this same relationship once CANUTE usurped the English throne is not known. Edwyn had also to face the power struggles within Wales of LLYWELYN AP SEISYLL and RHYDDERCH AB IESTYN, but he fell victim to another's ambitions when he was blinded and imprisoned by MEURIG AP HYWEL. He probably died soon after.

[EA30;EB20] RHYDDERCH AB IESTYN Glywysing, c1015-33; Deheubarth, 1023-33.
With the death of LLYWELYN AP SEISYLL in 1023 Gwynedd and Deheubarth were again split. IAGO AP IDWAL reclaimed Gwynedd, but Deheubarth was usurped by a claimant to the kingdom of Gwent, Rhydderch ab Iestyn, whom some genealogies identified as a descendant of HYWEL "DDA's" son OWAIN, but who was more probably descended from MORGAN "HEN's" son OWAIN. Genealogies were easily blurred in order to prove authority. He came to power first in Glywysing probably around 1015 after the death of his father IESTYN AB OWAIN, and he soon took advantage of the death of Llywelyn to storm through Deheubarth and lay claim to the whole of South Wales. Although his hold over Deheubarth was tenuous, he was a popular ruler who restored some of the pride and dignity to the people of South Wales which they had not experienced since the days of MAREDUDD AB OWAIN. After ten years, Rhydderch was slain in battle by HYWEL AB EDWIN, the grand- nephew of Maredudd. He was succeeded by his son GRUFFYDD.

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pg. 328.]

[EA41] MEURIG AP HYWEL Gwent, 1045-55.
The evidence suggests that Meurig grew impatient at the longevity of his father, HYWEL AB OWAIN, and longed to assume power. His father began to include him as a signatory to grants in the 1040s, but Meurig's impatience caused him to invade Gwent in 1045 and capture EDWYN AP GWRIAD, who was blinded and imprisoned. Meurig installed his son CADWGAN as ruler of Gwent and took over the kingship of Glywysing. At this time Meurig was really a vassal king to GRUFFYDD AP RHYDDERCH, who had reclaimed Deheubarth and styled himself king of South Wales. Gruffydd was a popular king and evidently disliked Meurig, as he tricked a Viking raid into leaving Glywysing untouched and led it into Gwent, which it devastated. Meurig was finally driven out of Gwent by GRUFFYDD AP LLYWELYN of Gwynedd who, in 1055, declared himself king of all Wales. Meurig's son, Cadwgan, was later able to reclaim Morgannwg after Gruffydd's death.

[EA42] CADWGAN AP MEURIG Gwent, 1045-55; Morgannwg, 1063-74.
Cadwgan was first installed as ruler of Gwent by his father, Meurig, who usurped authority there in 1045 by killing EDWYN AP GWRIAD. Cadwgan may still have been quite young at that stage, probably in his twenties. He and his father were driven out of south-east Wales in 1055 by GRUFFYDD AP LLYWELYN, but after Gruffydd's death in 1063 Cadwgan succeeded in recovering the territory of Morgannwg, whilst CARADOG AP GRUFFYDD claimed Gwent. Despite attempts by HAROLD II to subdue the Welsh, Cadwgan held on to his kingdom, but the position changed radically under the Normans. William Fitzosbern, who was made earl of Hereford by WILLIAM "THE CONQUEROR", made a major incursion into southern Wales from 1067 to 1070 and took over most of Gwent. Although the records are silent on the matter, Cadwgan probably died in one of the skirmishes, but his place was soon filled by the dispossessed Caradog.

Notes for IESTYN AP GWRGAN:

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pg. 329.]

[EA44] IESTYN AP GWRGAN Morgannwg, 1081-91.
The last independent ruler of Morgannwg. He was an opportunist, a descendant of OWAIN AP MORGAN but a relatively minor prince until he assumed power after the death of CARADOG AP GRUFFYDD. Tradition states that Iestyn had worked himself into the favour of Robert Fitzhamon, the Norman lord in Gloucester, with promises of help against RHYS AP TEWDWR of Deheubarth. There may well be some truth in this, but Iestyn did not benefit much from it. Fitzhamon was able to establish himself in a castle in Cardiff and from there systematically conquered and claimed Glamorgan. Iestyn was eventually driven out of the kingdom in 1191 and sought refuge in a priory at Llangenydd in Gower, where he died at an uncertain date, probably 1093. His descendants, however, were raised to the title of lords of Afan.

[EA40;EB22] GRUFFYDD AP RHYDDERCH Glywysing, 1033-55; Deheubarth, 1047-55.
After the death of RHYDDERCH AB IESTYN, Deheubarth was claimed by HYWEL AB EDWIN, whilst Rhydderch's son Gruffydd succeeded to his patrimony in Glywysing. He long planned to recover all of South Wales and he must have been a saviour to Deheubarth against the oppressive GRUFFYDD AP LLEWELYN, after the latter had defeated Hywel ab Edwin at the battle of the river Towy in 1044. It took three years of intense war before Gruffydd ap Llewelyn was eventually driven out of Deheubarth and in his anger he laid waste to parts of Dyfed and Ystrad Tywi. The reign of his father was fondly remembered in Deheubarth, and Gruffydd gained much popular support. He played to this and is remembered as much in legend as in history for his ingenious battle ploys. The best of these was in 1049 when the Danes posed a threat upon the Welsh shores. Gruffydd first ensured that all possible plunder was removed from the coast and hidden in the inland woods. He showed the Danes that there was no spoil to be had, but he offered to show them richer lands to the east. He then led the Viking fleet towards the lands of Gwent (now in the hands of MEURIG AP HYWEL) and the neighbouring English territory of Gloucester, where they plundered to their hearts' content. Gruffydd further led the Danes up the Severn attacking English settlements. The English never forgave Gruffydd and, in 1053, they captured and executed his brother Rhys. Gruffydd led a retaliatory attack on Westbury-on-Severn later that year. Gruffydd's reign, however, was now in its twilight. In 1055 he was attacked again by Gruffydd ap Llywelyn and this time was defeated and slain. The victor from the north at last claimed Deheubarth for which he had fought for twenty years. He held is until his death in 1063 when Glamorgan was regained by CADWGAN AP MEURIG.

[EB22;EA40] GRUFFYDD AB RHYDDERCH Glywysing, 1033-55; Deheubarth, 1047-55.
Following the death of RHYDDERCH AB IESTYN, his son Gruffydd succeeded to Glywysing, but determined to recover all of South Wales. Gruffydd was able to take advantage of the defeat of HYWEL AB EDWIN in 1044 to increase his authority, and three years later GRUFFYDD AP LLEWELYN was driven out of Deheubarth. Thereby Gruffydd ab Rhydderch became king of all South Wales. He was extremely popular, and a valiant hero. Unfortunately his reign was all too short. In 1055 he was defeated and slain by Gruffydd ap Llywelyn of Gwynedd who gained Deheubarth and held it until his death in 1063 when it passed to MAREDUDD AB OWAIN AB EDWIN.

Notes for CARADOG AP GRUFFYDD:

[Mike Ashley, The Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens,  (Carroll and Graf Publishers, New York, 1998), pg. 329.]

[EA43] CARADOG AP GRUFFYDD Gwent, 1063-74; Morgannwg, 1075-81.
The son of GRUFFYDD AP RHYDDERCH who had ruled all of South Wales until killed in battle against GRUFFYDD AP LLYWELYN of Gwynedd. Caradog was probably still a youth when his father died, but by the time Gruffydd ap Llywelyn died in 1063, Caradog was probably into his early twenties, and he was determined to recover his father's lands. He settled in upper Gwent, where in 1065 he undertook an audacious raid on HAROLD II's hunting lodge without reprisals. He was not, however, secure in Gwent for, following the Norman invasion of England, the marcher lords, particularly William Fitzosbern of Hereford, began their incursions into Wales. Fitzosbern undertook a major offensive around 1067 and claimed Gwent by conquest. Soon after, CADWGA AP MEURIG, who had established himself as ruler of Morgannwg, died, and Caradog, driven out of his own lands, usurped Morgannwg. He had already, in 1072, slain MAREDUDD AB OWAIN of Deheubarth, but had been unable to lay claim to the kingdom because Maredudd's brother RHYS came to the fore. In 1078 Caradog defeated and killed Rhys, but then faced a new rival, RHYS AP TEWDWR. Early in 1081 Caradog finally drove Rhys out of Wales and for a few brief months bathed in the glory of ruling most of South Wales. However, Rhys returned with substantial forces and defeated Caradog at the battle of Mynydd Carn in Dyfed. Caradog almost certainly died in the battle, as he is not heard of again. His son, Owain, was created lord of Caerleon by the Normans, and his descendants held the title until the year 1270.
