[EB8] SEISYLL AP CLYDOG Ceredigion and Seisyllwg,
fl 770s.
Ruler of Ceredigion who, at some stage in the late eighth century invaded Dyfed
and took control over those "cantrefi" which are known collectively as Ystrad
Tywi. This expanded kingdom he named Seisyllwg after himself and it formed the
basis of the future Deheubarth. The length of Seisyll's reign is uncertain but
it is possible he ruled for some time, perhaps as long as forty years, as there
is some suggestion that he was aroung in the 730s. In fact Seisyll's existence
is only known by reference back from his son, and his predecessors are known
only from the king lists.

[ED9;P105] CADWALLON AP CADFAN Gwynedd, c620-634.
Cadwallon was the son of CADFAN, but whereas his father chose wise counsel
whereby to govern, Cadwallon preferred the spear and sword. The story of
Cadwallon and EDWIN of Mercia is one of those remarkable relationships in
history. Legend has it that both were of about the same age although in reality
Edwin was older. When Edwin was driven out of Northumbria by ATHELFRITH he was
given refuge in the courts of Gwynedd and Powys. This brought Athelfrith
hammering on the door of Gwynedd and an enmity between the two kingdoms. One
might think that when Edwin was restored to the throne of Northumbria in 617 all
would be well between them, but not so. We may conjecture that as youths Edwin
and Cadwallon had grown apart and become rivals, and that rivalry developed into
a fury in later years. Once restored to the throne Edwin determined to conquer
Britain. He soon captured the British kingdom of Elmet and deposed its king
CEREDIG. With the death of Cadfan, Edwin invaded North Wales, driving the Welsh
back toward the sea. Cadwallon, unprepared, fled to the islet of Priestholm, off
Anglesey, and from there escaped to Ireland. His exile lasted about seven years,
during which time Edwin's authority spread over all of northern England and
Wales and the Isle of Man. Around 626 Edwin was converted to Christianity and
ceased his conquests. Cadwallon returned from Wales and was restored to his
kingdom, though as a vassal to Northumbria. But Cadwallon would have none of
that. He entered into an alliance with PENDA, the new warlord of the Mercians
who had his eyes firmly set on power, and the combined armies entered into a
prolonged war with Edwin. It is unclear when this war began, but probably not
until around the year 630 or 631. A Welsh poem recalls that Cadwallon fought
fourteen battles and sixty skirmishes which, even allowing for exaggeration, is
too much for one year. Edwin had a strong hold on the land and his power would
not be overturned in a short period. The climactic battle came at Haethfeld, or
Hatfield Chase, just north of Doncaster, in October 633 when the combined powers
of Cadwallon and Penda were too much for the Northumbrian army. Edwin was
killed, as were most of his family and many of his nobles. Cadwallon had
regained the old kingdom of his forebears, for it was from Northumbria that
CUNEDDA had come two centuries before.
However Cadwallon was no administrator and not especially used to kingship.
Had he followed his father's ways he might have restored a strong British
kingdom in the north and changed the fortunes of the Saxons. Instead Cadwallon
chose to ravage and destroy Edwin's kingdom. For a whole year the land was laid
waste. Cadwallon also killed Edwin's successors EANFRITH and OSRIC, but he was
taken by surprise by OSWALD, the son of the former aggressor Athelfrith. Oswald
attacked Cadwallon at dawn while the Welsh leader was encamped at Heavenfield,
near Hexham, by Hadrian's Wall. So unprepared was Cadwallon's army that it fled,
almost without fighting, for five miles. Cadwallon was killed in the affray.
Cadwallon could have been a great king. He was remembered as such by the
Welsh because, for one brief period, he re-established the might of the British
against the Saxons. Had he been a wise king he could have restored British might
and glory. But he lost this chance, and the British never again regained such
power. At his death he ws only in his late thirties. His son, CADWALADR was too
young to take power, and Gwynedd was lost to an adventurer called CADFAEL.

[ED11;P106] CADWALADR "FENDIGIAD (the BLESSED)"
Gwynedd, c655-c682.
Cadwaladr was perhaps the last great British hero, remembered in Welsh texts
almost like another ARTHUR. He was the son of CADWALLON, and was still a boy
when his father was killed in battle. He was presumably raised in exile either
in Ireland, or in one of the neighbouring Welsh kingdoms. The native Venedotians
of Gwynedd did not like their usurper king CADFAEL; they hailed Cadwaladr as a
promised saviour to deliver them from his yoke and to conquer the English again,
echoing the achievements of Cadwallon. Unfortunately he did not live up to their
expectations. In 658 he led an army against the West Saxons at Peonne in
Somerset and was soundly defeated. Thereafter he seems to have spent his years
establishing peace and prosperity in Gwynedd, rather than attempting to conquer
the English. He established at least three religious foundations in Gwynedd and
became highly regarded as a good and pious ruler. Indeed he was remembered as a
saint in the Welsh church. He is the last British king recorded by Geoffrey of
Monmouth in his "History of the Kings of Britain", and his death seems to mark
the end of the last chapter of British resistance against the Saxons. This is
probably more a choice of convenience than of events at the time, for many great
Welsh kings were yet to follow, but it is true that Wales never again mustered a
king able to challenge the Saxons who, by the time of Cadwaladr's death, were
firmly entrenched in England. The date of Cadwaladr's death is uncertain. All
histories agree that he died in a plague but whether it was the of 663/4 or the
one of 682 is not clear. The latter seems more likely, otherwise the reigns of
his successors IDWAL and RHODRI would be improbably long.

[ED12] IDWAL "IWRCH (ROEBUCK)" AP CADWALADR Gwynedd, c682-c720.
After the death of CADWALADR the history of the Welsh ruling houses enters a dark period for over a century until the emergence of MERFYN "FRYCH" and RHODRI "THE GREAT". Idwal's nickname, "Iwrch" or 'roebuck', suggests that he was probably small and elegant in stature, and almost certainly young when he came to the throne. Like his father, therefore, he was probably not warlike, but preferred to rule wisely and pay countenance to the church. Nevertheless it is evident that during Idwal's reign the Welsh sought to protect their lands from the encroaching power of Mercia to the east. Powys was more vulnerable, and their rulers were weaker, so in the early years of the eighth century (probably between 704 and 709), Idwal would have joined when the opportunity offered in a series of raids on Mercian territory during the comparatively weak reign of COENRED. The result was the construction by the Mercians, of Wat's Dyke, which ran from the southern end of the Dee estuary down towards Oswestry. This formed a line of demarcation between Mercian and Welsh territory and was not ostensibly intended as a defence. Idwal may not have lived to see the completion of the Dyke. He was succeeded by his son RHODRI "MOLWYNOG".

The end of the seventh century is one of the darkest periods of Welsh history
and little is known in any detail about the rulers of even the largest kingdoms.
It was at this time that the West Saxons and Mercians were at the height of
their power and seeking to control the borders and rich lands of Wales and, in
particular, the Severn valley. We can only imagine that Iutnimet's reign was one
either of constant defence against the Saxons or of seeking to work with them.

Ceredigion, fl 850s.
Meurig was a contemporary of RHODRI
"MAWR", the king of Gwynedd who, during Meurig's reign annexed the neighbouring
kingdom of Powys. Meurig would have struggled between keeping his independence
and having th help of Rhodri against the Viking invaders harrying the Welsh
coast from the 850s. Meurig's solution was to marry his daughter Angharad to
Rhodri. Soon after Meurig's death, his own son GWGON drowned, and Rhodri annexed
Ceredigion.

[ED13] RHODRI "MOLWYNOG" AP IDWAL Gwynedd,
c720-c754.
We know little of his reign, or even whn he came to the throne. His reign,
however, coincides with that of ATHELBALD of Mercia who, by 736, was styling
himself King of Britain. Athelbald had seen the completion of Wat's Dyke between
the borders of Mercia and Powys, but this had been more as a statement of
frontier than of defence, and we can imagine that Athelbald continued to force
and exercise his authority into Wales. Although it is far from clear, Rhodri may
well have retreated to establish his stronghold on the island of Anglesey, which
had always been the seat of power in Gwynedd and which was the site of power
struggles between Rhodri's children or grandchildren. There were no other strong
Welsh chieftains at this time and we can imagine Rhodri and his family clinging
proudly to their heritage, which they could trace back to CUNEDDA or COEL. It is
not clear who succeeded Rhodri as there is an uncomfortable timespan to fill
before we encounter Rhodri's later successors, HYWEL and CYNAN, fighting for the
throne. It has been suggested that he was succeeded by a distant cousin, CARADOG
AP MEIRION.

[ED14] CARADOG AP MEIRION Gwynedd, c754-c798.
The eighth century has few records to illuminate the lives of the Welsh royal
families. It is likely that during this period the royal house of Gwynedd
withdrew to their stronghold on Anglesey. It is also probable that Gwynedd was
ruled by two related houses, descendants of CUNEDDA, one of whom held Anglesey
and the other ruled "cantrefi" were Llyn, Arfon, Arllechwed and Rhos. Caradog
was the ruler of Rhos and claimed descent from EINION's son Owain. By the late
eighth century Caradog had the upper hand, though quite when he gained control
is hard to say. It may have been much later than 754, when RHODRI AP IDWAL died.
Caradog was almost certainly ruler in 768, the year in which Elfoddw, the bishop
of Gwynedd, persuaded the Welsh church to adopt the church of Rome's method of
calculating Easter, which had been the main rift between the Roman and Celtic
churches since the Synod of Whitby under OSWY of Northumbria in 664. Although
this was a decision of the church, it would have needed support from a strong
secular king and Caradog was the only king of any stature at that time. Caradog
faced increasing encroachment from the Saxons who were invading Powys during
this period. Caradog seems to have met his death from the Mercians under
CENWULF, although other records state that he was strangled. His successor,
HYWEL, is identified as his son in some genealogies.

[ED16] HYWEL Gwynedd, 814-825.
the name Hywel is the Welsh version of HOEL, both names meaning "eminent". Hywel
has variously been identified as the son (or grandson) of RHODRI ap Idwal or the
son of CARADOG ao Meirion. Whichever was the case, he appeared on the scene in a
dynastic struggle with his brother or distant cousin CYNAN AP RHODRI over the
rulership of Gwynedd, and in particular over the heartland of Anglesey. Hywel
managed to wrest control from Cynan in 814 but two years later was ousted.
However Cynan died later in 816 whether from natural causes or murder is not
known, and this left the way open for Hywel to take over complete control. We
may imagine that both claimants were old in years as Rhodri had died some sixty
years earlier. Hywel either left no children or all had died in the many
skirmishes during these dark days for, after his death, power was taken by
Cynan's grandson MERFYN "FRYCH".

[NA8] GWRIAD or GURIAT Man, fl 800s.
Gwriad was a Welsh prince and descendant of LLYWARCH "HEN" who seems to have
re-established himself on the Isle of Man sometime around the year 800 or later.
As Man was predominantly Irish at this time, the presence of a Welsh chieftain
suggests an interloper rather than a native ruler. Gwriad may have been of Powys
descent, as it was in Powys that Llywarch "Hen" sought refuge after his
self-exile from Rheged. Gwriad must have established himself with some degree of
authority as he was in league with CYNAN AP RHODRI, who was seeking to claim the
kingship of Gwynedd. Gwriad married Cynan's daughter Esyllt and their son,
MERFYN, who was reputedly born on Man, later inherited Gwynedd. Gwriad left his
mark on Man with the noted Guriat Cross originally placed on the north of the
island, near Maughold. Merfyn was believed to have ruled both Man and Gwynedd,
but although Man probably remained in Welsh hands for several generations, it
subsequently fell under Viking control.

[ED18] RHODRI "MAWR" (THE GREAT) ruled Gwynedd,
844-78; Powys, 855-78; Seisyllwg, 871-78.
The first Welsh king to receive the epithet 'the Great', Rhodri was the son of
MERFYN "FRYCH" and, through his mother, the grandson of CADELL AP BROCHFAEL of
Powys. Rhodri thereby succeeded to the kingdom of Gwynedd on the death of his
father, and to the kingdom of Powys on the abdication of his uncle, CYNGEN AP
CADELL. Through his marriage to Angharad, the daughter of MEURIG of Seisyllwg,
Rhodri also came to rule that territory when Angharad's brother GWGON drowned in
871. By the end of his reign Rhodri ruled the greater part of Wales, the most
united under a single monarch since the days of MAELGWYN.
If there was any time when Wales needed a strong king, it was then.
Rhodri's kingdom was under attack from the Danes to the west and the Saxons to
the east. In 853 BURGRED and Mercia combined forced with ATHELWOLF of Wessex in
a major assault against the Welsh. Though they overran Powys, they were unable
to defeat Rhodri and withdrew. In 855 the first Viking attack occurred on the
coast of Anglesey. Rhodri marshalled his defences and, in the following year, he
met a Danish fleet in battle and slew their leader, Gorm. The victory was
celebrated not only in Wales, but across England and in Francia, which was also
subject to Danish attacks. The Danes continued to harry the coasts of England
and Ireland, and later returned to Dyfed in southern Wales, but left Anglesey
alone for twenty years. This indicates that Rhodri had established significant
defences to discourage any invasion. Rhodri again faced an onslaught from the
Mercians in 865, when Burgred invaded as far as Anglesey but had to withdraw
because of the Viking threat to his own kingdom.
For Rhodri to sustain his defences on both east and west borders shows a
high degree of strategic skills and an ability to command considerable support
and loyalty. There is no doubt that Rhodri gave back to the Welsh a belief in
themselves and a chance to show their strength. If this had been achieved
earlier and sustained by RHUN and CADWALLON, the native British might well have
regained much of the island, but they were never able to sustain it beyond the
reign of one ruler. With Rhodri there came a ruler who changed the culture and
thinking of his people, a change which outlasted him and formed the basis for
the establishment of modern Wales.
Unfortunately for Rhodri his abilities let him down after a powerful reign
of over thirty years. In 877 the Danes renewed their raids on Anglesey, this
time with a stronger power base in Dublin and the Western Isles. They succeeded
in breaking through Rhodri's defences and he fled for safety into Ireland. He
returned to Gwynedd in the following year to face an onslaught from CEOLWULF II
of Mercia, himself a vassal king of the Danes, and Rhodri died in battle.

[ED15] CYNAN "DINDAETHWY" AP RHODRI Gwynedd,
798-816.
It is not exactly clear who ruled Gwynedd in the last years of the eighth
century. There were almost certainly a series of power struggles between
collateral lines of descent from CUNEDDA and his successors, especially after
the death of CADWALADR when Gwynedd entered a period under weaker rulers whose
power was overshadowed by the might of the Saxon kingdom of Mercia. Evidently
many young princes believed they were the ones who could restore Gwynedd to its
old glory, and Cynan was one of these. Although it is not clear when he came to
power, certainly by the year 813 it is recorded that he was waging a civil war
with HYWEL, who was either his brother or a distant cousin. Hywel gained the
upper hand in 814, but Cynan won back control in 816, only to die later that
year. Cynan almost certainly sought help in his war from GWRIAD, the ruler of
the Isle of Man, who had married Cynan's daughter Essyllt. Essyllt became the
mother of MERFYN "Frych" who established a new dynasty in Gwynedd and began the
re-establishment of Gwynedd's power.

[ED17] MERFYN "FRYCH" (THE FRECKLED) Gwynedd,
825-844.
Merfyn came to power following the death of HYWEL ap Caradog, and his accession
marked the end of a period of turmoil in Gwynedd's affairs and the start of a
new dynasty. Merfyn was the son of GWRIAD, the king of the Isle of Man, through
whom he could claim descent from LLYWARCH "HEN". His mother was Esyllt, the
daughter of CYNAN ap Rhodri, who was descended from the main line of Venedotian
kings since the days of CUNEDDA. Merfyn married Nest, the daughter of CADELL AP
BROCHFAEL of Powys, thus uniting the two great North Wales royal families.
Someone of Merfyn's strength of character was needed at this time. The seas
around Wales, Man and Ireland were being patrolled by viking pirates. Merfyn
must have been regarded as having authority over the seas-his name means "sea
ruler", not a great surprise for someone descended from the rulers of Man, who
relied upon their marine skills for their livelihood. But Merfyn was obviously
also a skilled negotiator and statesman. His alliance with Powys meant that the
two kingdoms presented a powerful front to the Saxons in the east. Merfyn thus
established a stable, if uneasy peace. It was during the early part of Merfyn's
reign that the "History of the Britons" was completed. This is attributed to
Nennius, a cleric and scholar of Gwyneddwho may well have been requested by
Merfyn to establish a history of Britain. Some evidence suggests that Nennius
had already started on this, either for his own interests or perhaps at the
instigation of Hywel ap Caradog, but it seems almost certain that it was Merfyn
who recognized the project for its true worth and promoted it. Interestingly it
was not used as a way of demonstrating the power and might of Merfyn, as he is
not mentioned anywhere in the "History". Nevertheless it demonstrates that
during Merfyn's reign scholarship was encouraged, which is always the sign of a
strong but compassionate king. Merfyn passed these and other qualities on to his
son RHODRI "Mawr" who would become king of all North Wales...

[EB13] CADELL AP RHODRI Seisyllwg, 878-909.
the younger son of RHODRI "MAWR", Cadell inherited Ceredigion and Ystrad Tywi
while his brother ANARAWD inherited Gwynedd and Powys. The previous dynasty of
Ceredigion had died out with GWGON when Rhodri annexed the kingdom, but there
were no doubt factions of the royal family who strove to regain power. Cadell
and Anarawd combined forces to ensure that they suffocated any opposition. By
the early 890s, they had not only forced Ceredigion into submission, but had
become a menace to HYFAIDD, king of Dyfed, and ELISEG of Brycheiniog. The
hostility worsened as the threatened kings sought the help of ALFRED of Wessex,
which Anarawd and Cadell countered in 894, by bringing in the Danes of York, a
disastrous move as the Danes ravaged Gwynedd and Anarawd in turn had to seek aid
from Alfred. In 895, however, Anarawd and Cadell began another campaign against
Seisyllwg and forced it into submission. It was probably only at this time that
Cadell effectively became ruler of the kingdom, but always under the overall
control of Anarawd. Cadell went on to conquer Dyfed in 905, eliminating the
previous ruling family. Cadell held his land by force, in complete contrast to
his son, HYWEL, whose abilities made him the greatest ruler the Welsh ever had.
