"...Oliver St. John, was Lord Chief Justice of England under Cromwell, of whom Campbell says in his lives of the Chief Justices, II, 80, 'With the exception of Oliver Cromwell, he had more influence on the events which marked the great constitutonal struggle of the 17th century than any leader who appeared on the side of Parliament. He was the first Englishman who ever seriously planned the establishment of a Republican form of government in this country.'"
