Came to America in 1643 from Wales.  Ws in Providence 1644, Lynn 1651, Braintree 1652 and Taunton 1653.  Went there at the request of interested parties to set up a "Bloomery Work" on Two Mile River.

Often traded with Indians and was such good friends with King Philip that when the war broke out, the latter gave his men strict orders never to hurt a Leonard.
King Philip lived about a mile from the forge,  James and his brother, Henry, built a iron forge in Plymouth Colony.

Came with father from Wales and settled at Taunton in 1652.  Connected with military historyof Taunton for 48 years.  Appointed to General Court, Ensign in 1st Military County 1 June 1665.  Capt. of the Military Band 2 Apr. 1690, Maj. of 1st Regt. of Bristol County 1709, Judge of Quarter Sessions 1685-1713,  Assoc. for Bristol County 1685 and'90, J.P. , Justice of Court of Common Pleas 1702-13, authorized to solomnize marriages 1689, deputy, selectman, member Town Council, clerk of Proprietary Records, treasurer of Iron Works, surveyor, merchant and Physician.  Left large estate.

Buried Old Burial Ground, Taunton.  INSCRIPTION:

His father built forge on Trout Brook.  He was placed in charge of it at the age of 23.  Held town office.  Selectman 1709.  Agent of town in various affairs.  Commissioned officer  (Lieut.)  of Military County  Farmer and dealer in real estate.  Aged 37 at death.
Buried in Thompson's Hill Cemetery.  INSCRIPTION:
