1.  HONORABLE MICAH1 STERLING1 was born 05 Nov 1784 in of Watertown, Jefferson County, New York1, and died 11 Apr 18441.  He married (1) <UNNAMED>1 Bef. 18331.  She died Unknown.  He married (2) RUTH BENEDICT1 06 Aug 18331, daughter of URIAH BENEDICT and RUTH ROCKWELL.  She was born 09 Feb 18011, and died Unknown.

Her husband, "Mr. Sterling, was a native of Lyme, Ct. He graduated at Yale College 1804. He read law with Judge Williams at Utica, also at Canandaigua. Having qualified himself for the legal profession, he opened a law office at Adams, Jeff. Co., in the year 1808. Circumstances indicating that Watertown would become the county seat, Mr. Sterling removed to W. about 1809, and soon became distinguished for his skill, success and honorable deportment as a citizen and counsellor. In 1821 he was elected a member of congress for the double district, composed of the counties of Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Lewis. In Nov., 1835, he was elected to the senate of New York for four years. of the public character of Mr. Sterling, the journals of congress and of the senate bear faithful and honorable testimony. By his learning and ability he obtained a high distinction in his profession, and by his courteous manners, his high sense of honor and probity, his public spirit and benevolence, and his acknowledged weight of character, secured to himself the confidence and esteem of all with whom he had intercourse."

Lewis Benedict, b. Aug. 18, 1836, at Watertown. He enlisted Oct. 14, 1861, as a private, declining a commission, in 94th Regt., N. Y. Vols. He sought and bravely filled the dangerous post of color sergeant, until his discharge on account of physical disability, Jan. 26, 1863; res. Watertown.

Military service: 14 Oct 1861, Enlisted as a private, declining a commission, in 94th Regiment, New York Volunteers1
