Roy A. Butz

Roy A. Butz, 76, of West Bend, died on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004 at the Health Care Center at Cedar Community.
He was born on Feb. 14, 1927 in Milwaukee to the late William and Katherine (nee Sonnleitner) Butz, attended Robert M. LaFollette Elementary School and graduated from Rufus King High School in 1945.
Roy and his family spent the summers at Big Cedar Lake and that is where he met his future wife.
He served with the U.S. Merchant Marine and the National Guard for nine years.
After his marriage to Arleen Boden on April 21, 1951 at Holy Angels Church in West Bend, the couple settled at Big Cedar Lake.
Roy was employed at the Milwaukee Gas Specialist Co. from 1947 until 1951 when he became employed as a "Culligan Man" in West Bend until illness forced his retirement in 1983.
Roy was an outdoors person who enjoyed fishing, hunting, ice boating, pitching horseshoes and watching the sale boat races on Big Cedar Lake.
He also loved music, especially listing to some of his children play the concertina.
After the death of his wife on June 18, 1986, Roy’s constant companions were his beloved "Herbie" and "Brownie."
Roy loved people and always had a smile for everyone.
Survivors include five children, Doug (Judy), David (special friend Jodi), and John, all of West Bend, Cathy (John) Ley of Baraboo and Sue (Andy) Schickert of the town of Addison; four grandchildren, Sara and Ben Butz and Stacy and Erica Ley; a sister-in-law, Joan Butz of West Bend; two brothers-in-law, Robert Metternich of Phillips and Richard (Lorraine) Boden of Kewaskum; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were a son, Roy Jr.; a brother, William; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Metternich.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, West Bend.
Father Jeffrey Haines will be the presider, and burial will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in Holy Angels Cemetery.
Visitation at the church only will be on Monday from 4 to 6:45 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Cedar Community would be appreciated.
A special thank you is extended to all former and present caregivers for the love, concern and care given to our dad and grandpa during the 12 years he was at the Health Care Center at Cedar Community.
