Oldsmobile's 100 Year Anniversary

Oldsmobile is the oldest continuous automobile manufacturer in the United States, having been started by Ransom E. Olds. Yes, after he sold Oldsmobile to General Motors he then started the REO Company. In July of 1997 Oldsmobile celebrated its 100th anniversary in Lansing, Michigan. They had at least one vehicle present from each of the 100 years of production. It was really a sight to behold seeing all of these vehicles displayed around downtown Lansing. They had them situated in different parks and lawns according to the decade they were built. The museum was also open during this time and many other activities were planned including country singing artists, free meals and birthday cake. They also had tours of the Oldsmobile Assembly Plant and several parades. The big parade featured the cars grouped by decade. Following is some of the pictures that we took during the parade. The 1960's is the latest car we have featured here. Sorry about that to the 70's thru 90's lovers.

New Meets Old

This is a 1903 Curved Dash Oldsmobile that was involved in a not so minor accident with one of those Japenese type vehicles. The Olds was making a right hand turn at a red light, that the other car was stopped at, when his left front spindle broke. As you can see there was quite a bit of damage to the Olds. In addition to the broken spindle, the complete curved dashed looked like a bunch of toothpicks and one of the lamps was damaged extensively. Someone from the Oldsmobile Assembly Plant happened by right after it happened and he called and had a truck brought out to pick up the car and take it back to the Assembly Plant. Needless to say, everyone was suprised and happy to see it in the parade the next day. Talk about a 100 year warranty.
