Hey, this is not my first fanfic but it is the first I have posted off my site. I kind of got the idea listening to a fanatic going on and on about how the world will revert to the old ways at the turn of the millenium. Send comments PLEASE!! sailorsilence@yahoo.com Rated: PG I think. THanks to AkemiStarKnight who thought this story was excellant. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Trees arched above the still body like the ceiling of a cathedral. An owl looked down from one of the skeletal trees. Its round golden eyes watched impassively as the body twitched and a low moan escaped into the moonless night. First one hand lifted itself from the cool ground. Then the dark tressed head eased itself off the ground. The pale skin seemed to reflect the meager light of the stars. A pair of grey eyes that had not seen the sky in over a thousand years opened slowly. The body eased itself upright. using their hands they pulled themselves backwards til their back rested on a smooth stone. Behind them the owl stared intently. Slowly they stood up using the stone for support. Rags of once fine clothe fluttered to the ground like wounded birds. The smooth stone beneath their hands was still polished despite its age. Around the edge of the clearing was remains of what was once a elegant church. "Why was I called?" a hoarse voice asked. The owl swooped down from its perch to land on the person's shoulder. "So soon?" they asked as they gently caressed the owls breast feathers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Millenia Serena rushed down the hall towards her class. Her long pigtails flapped behind her like banners heralding her passage. A peice of toast was crammed in her mouth. In one hand she had her school bags and the other a juice box. Her school uniform was slightly askew and one shoe was untied. Half sliding, half runing she flew into her class room. "Serena! You would think after twelve years of school you would know when class started." the teacher scolded from the front. "Sorry." Serena slid into her seat and swallowed the last of her toast. Opening her book she glanced around at the other people in the class. Her best friend Molly was directly infront of her hunched over her text book. Melvin was beside Molly, as usual. Ami was seated front and center, predictably. Lita was to Serena's right. On Serena's left was the window. At the front of the class the teacher started his lecture. Serena paid little attention to what was being said. She would just get the notes off of Ami later. Idly she sketched in the margins of her text as her mind wandered. Things had been quiet the last few years, no demons, no evil queens, no strange aliens, no pink haired little girl. A single tear struggled to free itself. Serena looked out the window, no Darien. It had been three years since what she had come to think of as That Day. Three years and not a day went by that she didn't think about it. "Hey Serena." Lita hissed across the aisle. "The teacher." Serena looked up to the front. "Glad to see you want to participate Serena. Now since you seem to think that this class is not very challenging, perhaps you can answer the question. Who was the Goddess of the Moon according to-" "Which one, there were three. Hecate, Artemis, and Selene to the Greeks. To the romans they were Trivia, Diana, and Luna." Serena asked with an edge to her tone. "I see you have been reading." The teacher commented. Turning away she stared back out the window. A shadow passing across the window caught her attention. Outside the sun continued to beat down unhampered. Slowly her reflection changed. The eyes grew dark as did the hair. The school uniformed changed from white and blue to solid black and curve hugging. A smile crept across Serena's face. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The owl once again presided over the clearing. A thin sliver of the moon gave just enough light to give everything an ghost like glow. The lone figure sat perfectly still watchinf the stars. Their only movement the fluttering of their hair in the soft breeze. "She will be here soon." The figure commented softly to the owl. The owl looked over at the only path leading from the clearing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Serena carefully eased her foot out the window trying to make as little sound as possible. Her bed creaked as her weight shifted. Serena froze and listened for movement within the house. After a few minutes she continued out the window. "Serena, where do you think you are going?" her mother asked from the doorway. Serena didn't answer. Slipping completely out the window she jumped easily to the ground. Above her her mother called for her to come back. Serena continued to ignore the summons and set off at a run down the street. The cement flashed beneath her black boots at unnatural speeds, her unbound hair flew out behind her like a banner, above her street lights flashed by giving quick glimpse of a young woman dressed completely in black. Soon the lights of the city faded behind her, ahead of her was the growing darkness of a forest. Serena slowed to a stop at the edge of the dense trees, she could sense the stirrings of power in the center of this forest. Vague memories had been slowly surfacing ever since the she saw the strange reflection. Memories of who she was and who she should of been. Cautiously she walked into the clinging darkness of the woods. The world she had lived in for the last 17 years seemed to be nothing more than a dream. The memories of a thousand years ago when she lived as a princess on the moon became more really. Eventually they too started to fade as they were a dream, she no longer remembered her battle with Beryl or Darien's death at her hand. All memories of earth were gone. Memories tinged with age replaced those of the moon, she had been called Selene by all instead of Serenity, she had been revered by Men and Women. When the Romans came they had adopted her as one of their own and gave her the new title of Luna. She remembered when the Romans started to drift away from the old ways and worshiped a new God, relegating her and her companions to myths. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mercury looked up from her computer. "She went through here." The others looked at the creepy forest that had not been there before today. "You can't be serious. Serena would run away from this place, it creeps me out so she would panic." Rei commented doubtfully. Mercury looked back at Mars. " I agree she would normally run from a place like this but, she was emitting some sort of strange energy and that maybe what caused her to go in." Around the four of them the December wind howled like a demented wolf sending chills up their spines. Slowly the four of them walked into the forest carefully watching the twisted branches that seemed to grab for them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The trees finally gave way to a clearing, rumble formed a rough rectangle where the church had once been, all that remained standing was the marble altar. A woman sat on the alter, her eyes were closed and her head back as if to soak up the meager light shed by the stars. "Hello Hecate," Selene stepped out of the trees. Her long silver hair hung to the ground in soft waves, White cloth was draped across her in gentle folds. The black haired woman looked up and smiled in greeting. "It has been too long. Athena was telling me about all the changes that have happened, including their pitiful attempt to banish me by building this church." she patted the marble next to her. Selene nodded politely to the owl in the tree. "It looks like you chose the wisest path of survival." the owl commented sardonically. "Being trapped as a human was not a pleasure trip, I assure you." Selene sat next to the dark goddess. "These humans are incapable of having fun, they live completely by the clock. And being human is so confining! You become as graceless as a duck." The sound of twigs snapping warned of the scouts aproach long before they actually appeared. "You'll see what I mean in a few minutes." Selene turned towards the sounds. The four girls burst into the grove and stumbled to a stop. "I see what you mean. Humans have deevolved." Hecate looked the girls up and down critically. "I suppose togas would make them more ascetically pleasing but they are still very gangly." "Serena?" Ami looked at Selene curiously. "Who? Oh, right me." Selene shrugged. "I am no longer Serena so would you please address me properly as Selene." "They look like those priestess, Aphrodite's, Are's, Herme's, and Zeus'." Athena commented as she landed on the ground a changed into her true form. "Pity they were lost." Selene flipped her hair over her shoulder. "I did tell them that drinking from the river would erase the memories of even gods. But I suppose they didn't want to remember their glory days." The scouts stood in shock as the three goddesses ignored them except as a topic of discussion. "What happened to Serena?" Mars demanded. The goddess looked at her coldly. Slowly it dawned on Mars she had just interupted Goddesses that were known to be fickle and unreasonable. "Um, never mind." She tried to back away. The dark Goddess flicked her wrist and Mars froze in her spot. "Let's leave before more humans decide to interupt us. Besides some of the other's should be back at Olympus by now." Athena addressed the other two. "We should get a head start on our plans for this new millenia, at least if we want to be one of the more worshiped deities after the destruction." "First I want to go talk to Hades about a young man." Selene said. "You still gone on the boy, Endy-some-thing?" Hecate asked in distain. "Hey, he is one hot guy!" Selene defended. Athena sighed and vanished from sight in a shower of sparks, Hecate quickly followed, leaving Selene alone with her old friends. She looked at each of them in turn, "At least they didn't turn you into cats like they did to my Priest and Priestess. I suppose I should reward you for your loyalty." Selene gestured and each of the girl's sailor uniforms melted away replaced by togas pale shades of their color. Each girl's hair changed to the deeper shades of their color as they aged till about 20 or so. Within them powers beyond the comprehension bloomed. "After all, we have to replace those four." Selene smiled enigmatically. "And more females in positions of power would be an asset." The four young women looked up stunned. "You made us Goddesses!" the girl that had once been SailorMercury asked increduosly. "Yes of course I did, how else would I keep my closest friends near me?" "Why did this happen? Why did you become Selene?" former-SailorVenus asked. Far away in the distance bells began to toll midnight and the end of December. Selene smiled, "Life is a circle that returns to where it started."
