I See You Standing off in the Distance
I see you standing off in the distance
Prompting the mind to wonder, wondering back to better days
A time of dreams and what could have been…
When a joyous uncertainty lay in the wind
How we toured with one another around town
Just to be together…
Sharing our deepest of thoughts, our dreams, our fears…
And shedding together our tears
Then, when even the heart didn't know
How we danced together in the dark
In what was a near perfect evening, surrounded in friends
Could my heart have felt it then?
Later as we waded in the moonlight
Confessing how we felt, agreeing to be friends
Dismissing all else, to have been but caught in the moment
How we traveled together with a third
Singing and conversing with one another to the mill
Playing in the fields, walking the orchard and sharing a meal
All enjoying being in each others company, how happy we were that day
Was I feeling it then, could it be?
Though stronger, the heart still couldn't tell
How we meet on the fateful day to share drink and company
Looked into one another's eyes, with hot chocolate and tea in hand
Again sharing our thoughts, dreams, and fears
The heart knew it then…
The answer to the question I had been asking it was apparent now
How I wanted so badly to tell you then
As I agreed with you I would if the question were answered
Yet my fear wouldn't let me
Too afraid of being rejected?
That your hearts answer wasn't the same
Too afraid of being hurt again?
The heart now knowing its answer
How I hid it from the world
To protect myself… to protect you?
While the heart now lies torn
With almost nothing left but its pain
While I?
I'm left pondering of what could have been…
Of the one that got away
So I see you standing off in the distance
