Lincoln's Only Street & the Chapman Murder Site

On this page are a few photos taken from varying positions of Lincoln's one and only street. Also included is a photo depicting the approximate location of where Huston Chapman, the lawyer for the widow Susan McSween, was shot and killed by Billy Campbell and Jimmy Dolan in Feb. 1879.

This photo was taken from about the center of town looking west. The Murphy-Dolan store can be seen towards the center of the photo.

This photo was taken from the second-story balcony of the Murphy-Dolan store. Looking east, the Wortley Hotel's lot can be seen across the street, but the building itself is too far back from the road to be visible.

Chapman's Murder Site

This image, looking west, shows the approximate location where Huston Chapman was shot down by Billy Campbell and Jimmy Dolan on Feb. 18, 1879. By the time the body of the one-armed lawyer was discovered the following morning, it had been badly burned due to the fact that the shot fired by Campbell set Chapman's clothes on fire. The torreon can just be seen on the right side of the photo.
