Seven Rivers Warrior

John Hurley

Johnny Hurley was born in New York in 1855. He wound up in New Mexico and became a member of the Seven Rivers Warriors. He was in the posse that murdered John Tunstall and started the Lincoln County War. He also was in the posse of Seven Rivers Warriors and Jessie Evans Gang members that ambushed Frank MacNab, Frank Coe, and Ab Saunders. The next day, he fought in the Battle of Lincoln and later fought in the Five-Day Battle. He testified in Lt. Colonel Dudley's favor at Dudley's court of inquiry in 1879. He also married Juanita Mills, operated a Fort Stanton saloon, and managed DeLany's billiard hall at Fort Stanton. During the investigation of counterfeit money in Lincoln County by Federal Treasury Department Agent Azariah Wild, Hurley was made a deputy U. S. marshal. He also played a minor role in the hunting of Billy the Kid throughout November of 1880. He later served as a deputy sheriff again and on January 24, 1884, while serving under Lincoln County Sheriff John W. Poe, he was shot and killed at Chaperito by rustler Nicholas Aragon.
