Coordinating teacher: Mr. Ron Meier
In January of 1998 I began my first student teaching experience, serving as an 8th grade American history teacher at West Intermediate School. Within this capacity, I endeavored to bring history to life for the students by using role-playing exercises, group projects, games, simulations, and creative writing assignments. Students became delegates from the Constitutional Convention as well as workers from the Industrial Revolution. In both simulations, students took a position and defended their opinions during heated classroom debates on states’ rights, political systems, suffrage, and working conditions. In other exercises, students explored the true nature of American Democracy, defining their constitutional rights and applying these rights to present-day situations. For more details on the topics we covered in class, review some of my lesson plans linked to my homepage.
Throughout my student teaching experience, I participated in a myriad of school-related activities. These activities included attending several parent meetings, faculty meetings, IEP meetings, school management meetings, team meetings, and school dance parties. Additionally, I completed progress reports for each one of my students, participated in student-parent-teacher conferences, and proctored the Social Studies portion of the MEAP test. In the realm of extracurricular activities, I ran the scoreboard for middle school basketball games and served as the assistant coach for the 7th grade girls’ volleyball team.
