Overview of County Stray Animal
Arrangement
The present arrangement for handling stray
animals in Alcona County evolved informally
between a local veterinarian & the Alcona
Sheriff Department. The arrangement was
never intended to be permanent, and suffers
various problems. Under the arrangement, the
animal clinic accepts strays from the Alcona
Sheriff Department, with payment for this
service being made on a per-animal basis.
Although this arrangement has been in effect
for a number of years, it has been an ongoing
strain on the employees and resources of the
animal clinic. It also presents liability
concerns, and fails to adequately address
important goals such as returning lost
animals to their owners and reducing
companion animal overpopulation.
The Alcona Humane Society will offer the
County the opportunity to overcome these
problems while addressing the fundamental
goal of relieving the stray animal problem in
Alcona County. We have had an overwhelming
show of support from the community in our
initial efforts, including a sizable donation
toward construction of our animal shelter
building from an individual.
