Brief History of the Alcona
Humane Society's first year
In the spring of 1999 various individuals got
together to discuss the possibility of a
humane society in Alcona County. In May
the first public meeting was held and more
than 60 individuals attended. At this time
the board members were elected.
In June
another meeting was held and the name "Alcona
Humane Society" was finalized. Initial
committees were set up.
During the July
meeting the various committees reported what
they had been working on. Possible locations
for the Humane Society were reviewed and
various fund-raisers were discussed.
During
the August meeting discussions were held on a
possible site, tenative blueprints for a
building were reviewed, grant committee was
discussed, & committees gave reports on what
they are working on.
In the September
meeting the committees again gave updates and
various topics were discussed. The paperwork
on our non-profit status came through. A LOGO CONTEST was held.
On
October 5 another meeting was held and
various topics were discussed including a
zoning variance, logo contest, and the
Save-Share program. The Alcona Humane
Society is a beneficiary of the Glen's
Markets Save-Share 2000 Program. Individuals
who shop at Glen's can sign up to
have 1% of their purchases go to the Alcona
Humane Society. Our Glens number is: 153239.
Any receipts you may have for Carter's can be
brought to our monthly meeting and the AHS
can redeem them for a donation.
At the
November meeting the
winners of the logo contest were announced.
We would like to thank all participants.
Congratulations to the winners!! An
educational presentation was given by a young
lady and her companion dog on the Leader Dog
program.
During December discussions
continue to focus on the building site and an
upcoming Winter Spaghetti Supper Fund-raiser,
"Warm Hearts for Cold Noses"!
At the January
and February meetings updates were given on
the various developments on the building
site, the spaghetti dinner, and other topics.
The "Future Site of The Alcona Humane
Society" sign has been constructed on the
property.
Thank you!!
The first annual spaghetti supper fund-raiser
was held Saturday, March 25, 2000 and it was
a huge success. Special appreciation goes to
the Alcona Sheriff Dept deputys, Justice
(K-9), those who sold tickets, worked at the
dinner, made desserts, and the gracious lady
who donated the door prize. All your hard
work is appreciated!
