Chapter Four

Serena arrived early in the morning for the play. After she told her parents about it they were ecstatic. Her brother told her she would trip on her dress. Later that night though he said he was proud of her. She walked to her dressing room and sat on her vanity seat and stared in the mirror.

* What if I do trip and fall? What if I forget my lines? What if…. *

Darien’s words echoed in her mind and she lost her train of thought. She smiled to herself. Yes, She most certainly was in love. She wondered though if Darien felt the same way. She heard a knock on her door then walked over to it and opened it up. (AN: And speaking of the Devil….) Darien stood outside with a bunch of red roses in his hand and a devilish grin on his face.

“Hi Serena.”

“Darien! What on earth are you doing!”

“Giving my soon to be famous leading lady luck and roses.”

“You didn’t have to do that! And besides my leading man I would be no where without you.”

She took the roses from him and sat them on her vanity. She pulled a rose from the rest and put it under her nose and inhaled its sweet scent.

“They are beautiful Darien. Thank you.”

He scooped her up in his arms and whispered in her ear.

“You can thank me this way.”

He planted his mouth on hers for a sweet kiss. The rose dropped to the ground momentarily forgotten. When they broke apart Janelle was standing in the doorway with a big grin on her face.

“Don’t mind me I’m only her Lady’s Lady-in-waiting!”

She said in a singsong voice. Serena and Darien blushed and pulled from each other’s grasp.

“Hi Janelle.”

She winked at Serena then ushered Darien out.

“Wouldn’t wan the leading man seeing what his Lady looks like before the opening. It’s bad luck you know.”

“I thought that was for weddings?”

“It works for plays too now out!”

She shut the door and turned and faced Serena a big grin on her face.

“I had something different planned out, but now I’m going to make you look like a Queen.”

She pulled Serena into a chair and started to work. Giggling to herself as she hummed. Serena just smiled dazed and happy.

* Who would have thought. Darien and me. Darien and me. It’s like a fairytale. Now that I think of it. Romeo and Juliet backwards. *

Serena closed her eyes and pictured Darien in his Romeo attire. A smile fought its way to her lips. The picture focused on the tights Darien had to wear. (AN: Perverts. Or maybe it’s just me.)

* He is going to be so uncomfortable. *

Just then there was a knock at the door. Janelle let out an exasperated sigh.

“People!”

She walked to the door and threw it open.

“It says do not disturb!”

“I just wanted to wish Juliet good Luck.”

Janelle eyed the girl.

“That is not possible. She is getting ready.”

The girl made a noise and pulled Janelle out of the room. She slammed the door and locked it. Facing Serena she got a cynical smile on her face. Janelle pounded on the door and screamed for security.

“So. You showed up.”

“Of course. I got the part remember?”

Serena was shocked at the harshness of her voice and words.

* I will not sink down to her level. *

“What makes you think you are good enough to be Juliet? Do you actually think that the audience with applause for you? Much less give you a standing ovation?”

“I am not hear for the audience ‘Barbie.’

Serena spit the words out disgustingly.

“I am here to perform a play that was written years ago by a man of great talent. I am here to honor two lovers who gave their lives so they could be together. For two lovers torn apart by a name.”

Serena advanced toward ‘Barbie’ and she backed up as well.

“I am not here to fight over a leading role or a man. And I am certainly not here to waste my time on a fake selfish spoiled ‘Barbie like you do you understand hat? Or do I have to spell that out of you?”

‘Barbie’ was up against the wall next to the door handle now. Shouts from security, the director, and Janelle were erupting from the oak. ‘Barbie’ lost her nerve.

“Are you going to hit me?”

Serena laughed softly.

“Hit you? You think I’m going to hit you? No. Never. I would be just like you if I did. Hitting you is the farthest thing in my mind.”

“Good. Just to tell you. My friends and I have front row seats. We are going to be laughing at you every time you trip and fall. I can see it now. In stead of applause it will be laughter.”

‘Barbie unlocked the door and walked out. Following were murderous stares from the security guards and every one else. The director looked like he was about to have a heart attack. He rushed over to Serena and grabbed both her arms.

“Are you alright? Did that girl touch you? If she did I will have her thrown out and arrested!”

“I’m fine. Really. She didn’t touch me.”

“Phew! Well, if you don’t need anything everybody out! Juliet needs to finish getting dress!”

Everyone left except Janelle.

“What was that chicks problem?”

Serena shrugged her shoulders and sat in the chair.

“We are almost done Serena. Are you nervous?”

“There is a pretty good chance I will pass out on stage.”

Janelle started laughing.

Darien paced back and forth.

* I can do this. I can do this, I can do this… Oh I can’t do this!”

He sat down and buried his head in his hands. He heard a knock on his door and walked over to it.

“Yes?”

“Sir it is time for you to begin.”

“Alright.”

* Well, it is too late to back out now. *

Darien walked out of his dressing room and on to the stage. Scene after scene until Serena came on. When she did he was caught off guard. He heard the gasps of the audience as well. (AN: Picture a long flowing white gown with a transparent veil over it. Off the shoulder with gloves that reach to mid shoulder. On top of her head was a golden tiara with a pink heart placed in the middle of it. He hair carelessly put up with curls. Woven into the stray strands were tiny beads of silver. ;) ) Serena nervously looked at the audience. True to her word, ‘Barbie’ and her friends were in the front row. She was sending Serena a murderous stare while her friends were gaping at her. She brought on a bright smile and proceeded with her lines.

~End Flashback~

Serena still couldn’t believe she had gotten a standing Ovation. It made her dream come true. She smiled as two hands encircled her waist. Well, one of them any ways. She looked up into the eyes of Darien. And she new she had found her match. Thanks to Juliet and her Romeo.
