What Violence Can't Solve

Prelude

The door to the room swung open with a creak, flooding it with sunlight and the briny smell of saltwater. A man entered, his balance well-maintained on the swaying deck. He whistled an old sea chanty and squinted inside, adjusting his eyes to the dim light.

From behind one of the many piles of haphazardly scattered crates, a figure watched him. She cursed softly to herself, almost inaudibly, and shook the two still forms at her feet, attempting to wake them. One by one they rose and looked about with concern, too aware of the situation to voice their questions.

As the man came closer, peering among the crates as he searched for some desired object, one of the newly awoken figures spoke. "Love," she said, her voice hardly louder than a breath of air, "What should we do?"

The first figure, Love, replied, her voice no louder than her companion's. "Wait."

They held their breath in anticipation as the man walked nearer. Love's muscles tensed, and she waited in a crouch until he was close enough. Then, suddenly, she sprang from her spot with the grace of a cat, wrapping her arms around the man and covering his mouth with her hand. With a mighty heave, she yanked him over the top of the crate and into the place where the other two waited. The man let out a startled cry which was effectively muffled my Love's hands.

The third figure spoke, gesturing with a fist wrapped thick with electric tape. "Now what do we do with him?"

Love regarded the man with dark eyes. "We get Sheave ta talk 'im outta ever seein' us."

The second figure bobbed her head and turned to the man. She locked eyes with him in the dim light, making firm contact as Love held him in place.

"You never saw us here," she whispered, her voice strangely enchanting. "We were never here at all... You just couldn't find what you needed... It was too dark..." Her pupils had been swallowed in a sea of blue, lost in the hypnotic tone of her voice. "You're going to find whatever you're looking for. Then you will leave." She paused a moment, her face seeming almost eerie in the ill lighting. "Do you understand?"

A brief nod was her only response before the man stood, brushing away Love's hold as though it was some slight annoyance. He walked straight to the back of the storeroom, bent over, and retrieved the object he'd been instructed to find. Without so much as a backward glance, he headed immediately to the door and exited the room. The door swung shut behind him, plunging the room and its occupants into darkness.
