Van Buren County Spanish Syllabus
The purpose
of this program is to give the students from Van Buren County and opportunity
to learn another language other than English, provide them with language
skills in case these are required in the job market, and prepare them to
enter a college career if they so desire.
The program will offer three levels
-
Introduction to Spanish for 7th and 8th grade students
-
Spanish Level I for grades 9th through 12th.

Spanish Level II for grades 9th through 12th.
-
Spanish Levels III and IV may be offered in the near future
however they are not offered or required at this point
Introduction to Spanish Language
Objectives: The learners
will (TLW) be introduced to basic Spanish language
during a six-weeks period. These basic skills will include: learning
the alphabet , the numbers, basic expressions, greetings, how to ask questions
in Spanish in order to gather information
Activities: There will be lots of oral drills,
written practices, games, class projects, group work, home works, skits,
quizzes, and tests. Also, there will be projects to be projects
to be done at home or the community, field trips, and special guests to
speak to the class, whenever possible.
Materials: Textbook to be used is
NUEVOS AMIGOS, edited by Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, Publishers, Inc.
Edition 1989. Also, the workbook that comes along with it.
Other materials used on an everyday basis are notebooks, paper, pencils
and/or pens
Assessment: Students will be assessed on the spot,
during language drills, quizzes, projects & tests. The grading
system in place will be
A= 95-100%
B=85-94%
C=75-84%
D=70-74%
F=00-69%
Criteria for grading will be:
Class work 11%
Homework

Midterm and Final Tests 33%

At the end of the 30 classes course in Spanish language the
students shooed know the following things

Understand and produce isolated words and learned phrases
in Spanish

Understand and use different greetings at different times
of the day and with different kinds of people
-
Be able to ask basic questions such as "What is your name"
or "How are you" or "Where do you live"

Know how to tell time and talk about the weather
-
Know how to say much how much things cost and be able to
gather information by knowing ot ask questions properly
-
Know little more about the world that speaks the spanish
language and their curltrural aspects
Spanish I and II Levels
Goals:
-
Communicate in a language other than English
-
Connect with other disciplines and acquire information
-
Develop insight into the nature and clutter of the other
language.

Participate in multicultural activities in the school and
in the community
Objectives

The learner will communicate in Spanish language, provide
information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions

The learner will be able to understand and interpret written
and spoken language on a variety of topics

The learner will be able to present information, concepts,
and ideas to an audience o listeners or readers on a variety of topics

The learner will demonstrate knowledge and understanding
of daily life, traditional ideates, and respective
-
The learner will reinforce and further the knowledge of other
disciplines (including their own English Language) thorough the study of
the spanish language.

The learner will acquire information and recognize the distinctive
view points of that are only available through the foreign language and
its culture

The learner will demonstrate understanding on the nature
of language through comparison of languages studied and their own.

The leaner will use the language for leisure and personal
enrichment and fulfillment
Activities

Students reading aloud when asked. Silent reading for
later questioning

Projects and games and many other activities geared to enhance
learning (video, scavenger hunts, field trips).

Other materials in the classroom and the internet when available
Assessment:

The students will be assessed constantly during oral drills;
their use of the language to ask for things; use of ht language to communicate
with one another in the classroom and outside (since learning a language
is an ongoing process).

Through spoken written work in class, projects, etc.

Quizzes at different times (end of chapters).

Grading Criteria
Expectations:
Level I Spanish:
At the end of the course students should be able to:

Give and follow simple instructions

Express personal likes and dislikes
-
Express basic needs and courtesies.

Exchange greetings and personal information.

Comprehend simple oral messages

Understand everyday brief written messages and short
personal notes

Give simple oral presentations about family, friends, school,
home, personalities, biographies

Use appropriate gestures and oral expressions for greetings,
leave-talkings, and common courtesies in the classroom

Experience products of the culture: songs, stories, foods,
traditional celebrations and enjoy art.

Talk about prices, economic problems, politics, family, interpersonal
relationships, weather, situations, temperature, dates, ambitions, sharing
dreams and a variety of topics.

Ask questions to gather information and give directions to
a lost person looking for directions.
-
To find places to live, buy, rent, eat, have fun in the classified
sections of spanish news media or spanish internet.
Level II Spanish:
At the completion of this course the students should be
able to:

Create written and spoken dialogs in past, present, and future
tenses.

Keep a conversation going in a way that can be understood
by a naive spanish speaker without much difficulty
-
Initiate and sustain basic communications and describe in
sentences and/or group of sentences about different topics of interest
in their lives.

Read and understand short written passages from newspapers,
magazines, books, internet information in Spanish. Compose short
messages, simple letters to friends, relatives or pen pals.

Have mastery of an ample vocabulary and good knowledge of
the use of proper verb tenses, proper grammar and proper diction in the
target language
-
Failure to meet this criteria, might result in having to
take it again
