NMGMS February Minutes by Rena Everett, Secretary

Head north for T-Rex and next meeting The monthly meeting of the North Mississippi Gem and Mineral Society was called to order by the Vice-President, Bob Marshall, at 1:10 p.m. on January 19, 2002, in the Applied Arts Building at Wood College in Mathiston, Mississippi. There were about 20 members present and one guest, Imogene Brown of Wood College.

The first order of business was the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, after which Bob reported on the fun that we had at the Christmas party, told those not present how much we missed them, and thanked Arch Murphree for the delicious ham. He also thanked George Everett for collecting and delivering the Toys for Tots. The Marines in Oxford were also very grateful.

T-Rex Time

He reported that he and Ruby had taken their grandchildren to see “T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous” and that it was very good. It will be playing at the Pink Palace until March 1, 2002. The next IMAX presentation will be about caves—another possible topic of interest to our members.

Silent auction nets $116

The minutes of the December meeting were approved as printed in The Nugget. Treasurer, Shirley Randle, reported that our silent auction last month netted $116.00, and that the present balance in our checking account is $435.13.

Next meeting in Iuka

The next meeting will be at the Public Library in Iuka, with Dr. Wane Cannis, from the University of Alabama, Florence, as our speaker. See elsewhere in the newsletter for directions to the Library in Iuka.

Elections

George Everett reported for the Nominating Committee. Since all of the present officers except the vice-president have agreed to serve another term, there was only the one office to be filled. Mary Reed agreed to have her name placed in nomination as our new vice-president. We will have the election next month.

Calling for all email addresses

Editor Sandy Grych announced that she needs e-mail addresses for everyone who has one because she is going to try to begin sending The Nugget by e-mail. That will save us a considerable amount of postage.
EFMLS Raffle

George Everett announced that he had received tickets for the Eastern Federation Raffle (to benefit the EFMLS Fund). They are $1.00 each, and those who want to purchase one should see him after the meeting. George received 10 tickets, and he sold 14. Many thanks to the purchasers on behalf of the Eastern Federation.

MGMS Annual Show

We were reminded that the annual show of the Mississippi Gem and Mineral Society will be held in Jackson the weekend after our February meeting.

The Dixie Mineral Council, to which many of our members belong, is sponsoring a fossil field trip to Louisville, Mississippi, next Saturday, January 26.

Possible Future Field Trips

Bob announced that David Dockery might possibly be able to take our club on a fossil field trip on some of the islands in the Tennessee River near Iuka. There are still some things to be ironed out before this trip can take place. The next time we meet in Mathiston, Mary Reed will arrange with her son, who works there, for us to go on a field trip to the lignite mine.

The business meeting was adjourned about 1:30 p.m., and the members were invited to enjoy the delicious refreshments provided by the ladies from Mathiston. We brought our plates back to the meeting room so that we could enjoy our snacks while watching the video that Sandy Grych had provided for our program. The video was one about Gemstones of the United States that was put out by the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institution. It was very interesting, and all of the members declared their readiness to go out and hunt for specimens like the ones that we saw.

After the video was over, a drawing for the door prizes was held, and there were several happy winners. After another stop at the refreshment table, we all wended our ways home. (The door prizes are brought to the meetings by club members. If you have extra specimens or other gem or mineral or fossil-ly things that you would like to share, you are encouraged to bring them to one of our meetings.)

Respectfully submitted,

Rena Everett, Secretary
