but I've read every damn poem
you've dealt us--
not only read them, but doted on them--
lived in 'em--
and some of them hurt--
words can
cut deeply
slice sharply,
but I bled bravely
and even came back the next day for more,
and then one time I read my own poem
aloud to the class
and afterward
no one spoke
at all
until Little-Miss-Behavioral-Objective
in the 3rd row 5th seat
asked,
"will there still be time
to review for the test when we're done
with these poems?"
she knew too well
the head gets measured
