DEVILS TOWER NATIONAL MONUMENT TRIP REPORT
1997

My friend Jon and I left Deadwood and drove to Devils Tower during the late morning hours. The weather was cool and overcast, but it did not look like it was going to rain. As we drove closer we could see the tower rise up among the hills. It was an unusually shaped formation that has many stories and myths about it. We entered the park and we began the hike around the tower. The trail cuts through may forested areas, but it is not too difficult. We passed by the river and the red rock banks that it had. We could see the rolling black hills off in the distance in addition to a huge monolith behind us. At some points we could see the tower better than others. Around the edge of the tower there are a lot of rock pieces that probably had crumbled off years ago. After a couple of hours we made it back to the car. This was a nice hike, especially since we did not see anyone else on the hike. It is a shame that more people don't venture off the paved roads and into the backcountry to get a better view of it all. On the contrary, I guess I do not want too many of them getting into the backcountry to make it busy.
