As we drove by the towns of Buffalo and Sheridan, we could see the Bighorns rising up in the distance. We drove through Sheridan and on to the northeast entrance to the Bighorn Mountains. The road switched back and forth up the mountain as we climbed higher and higher. At one point we stopped to see a hang glider take off. It was neat to see him take off and fly around as he made his way down to the valley. The view from there was incredible. We continued our drive through the Bighorns and finally set up our camp at the Porcupine Campground.
After we set up camp we went for a hike down in the Devil's Canyon, with the Porcupine Falls as our goal. The trail was not well marked but we followed the creek down in the valley of the canyon. The scenery was awesome and never saw another person while we hiked. As we were taking a break, we were contemplating whether or not to turn back since the trail was not well marked. At that moment we thought we saw a black bear so that made up our mind. We hiked back to the campground to make dinner.
We had a delicious lasagna dinner (dried Backcountry Meal), and afterwards we drove to a rock formation on the main road to watch the sun set. While the sun went down behind a mountain, cool cloud formations appeared to the southeast. It was in the direction of the Cloud Peak Wilderness (I guess that is how they get their name). We could hear coyotes off in the distance then we drove back to the campground and started a fire a relaxed in our chairs. When it was nearing dusk, a deer walked by right in front of us. She came within 20 feet us periodically as she was feeding on grass. As it got dark we could hear several packs of coyotes howling in the distance. We went to bed shortly thereafter and we could hear the coyotes for a while till we went to sleep.
The next morning we woke up and it was fairly cold (probably in the low 40s). We packed up our gear and proceeded to drive down the mountains. The sunrise was pretty and it created a nice coloring of the mountains as we drove west towards Yellowstone. We drove through several small towns such as Lovell, and we got to see several neat looking rivers and rock formations. This was a scenic drive as we drove to Cody, Wyoming.
