Notes for GOVERNOR SIMON BRADSTREET:

Governor of Massachusetts Colony

1630 The Winthrop Fleet "Eleven vessels brought 'The Great Emigration of this year, via: Arbella the Flagship, Ambrose, Talbot, Jewel, Charles, Mayflower, William and Frances, Hopewell, Whale, Success, and Trial.

The first five ships sailed April 8 from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, and arrived at Salem June 13 and following days. The other half of the fleet sailed in May and arrived in July at various dates. Altogether they brought about 700 passengers.... The impressive death toll which followed the voyages, claiming about a third of the emigrants who settled in the Bay Colony, brings clearly to the reader one of the worst features of ocean travel in that day.... The long voyage of the Arbella began to take its victims soon after arrival. As a result the slopes of Charleston Neck became a hospital camp during the autumn and winter after the landing of Winthrop. The aged and weakly went first until as (Thomas) Dudley states, 'there dyed by estamacon about 200 at least so Lowe hath the Lord brought us.' " Banks, Planters of the Commonwealth.

From The Great Migration Vol. 1 page 209-213:

Simon Bradstreet of Horbling, county Lincoln, and Mrs. Anne Bradstreet were listed among passengers of the Winthrop Fleet. His first residence was in Boston, then Cambridge 1634, Ipswich 1636, Salem 1646, Andover 1652, Salem 1676, Boston by 1689, Salem 1692. He returned to England in 1662 on colony business. He was named a freeman 25 May 1636, one of seven men admitted that day who had been involved with the Massachusetts Bay Company for many years, and had held high offices; their admission to freemanship was merely a formality.

Resident at Emmanuel College, Cambridge about 1628-29 and was a very well-educated man. Was assistant, Massachusetts Bay Colony 1630 to 1678; secretary 1630 to 1636; governor 1679 to 1686 and 1689 to 1692; Commissioner of the United Colonies 1644, 1663 to 1776 and many other offices at the county and local level, such as Cambridge Selectman and Essex Magistrate.

Will dated 23 Dec. 1689, with codicil of Jan. 27, 1692/93 and proved 2 Apr. 1697: Simon Bradstreet of Boston being at present in competent health and strength set his house in order and "for my outward estate which God in his rich mercy hath blessed me withal in his Wilderness (having given all my eight children such portions as I thought meet and equal & divided my plate and household stuff amongst them) the remainder was bequeathed to "my dear and loving wife Mrs. Ann Bradstreet all that estate real and personal whatsoever that I had of hers or with her marriage in lieu of her thirds," also $10 per year during her life out of my farm at Lynn "Whereon Cornet John Lewis now liveth."".... to my daughter Mrs. Mercy Wade and to her husband Mr. Nathaniel Wade" my farm at Tops Field whereon John Hunkins now lives, with twenty six acres of upland, part of an island, also the lot of puland of forty acres, she of her husband paying yearly sum of $5 to my wife Mrs. Ann Bradstreet during her widowhood.

In a codicil dated 1692/93 Bradstreet altered the bequest of his two Negros Hannah and Bilhah so they were completely at the dispose of wife Ann Bradstreet and she to pay to said Negros 20c each.

Partners with George Carr and Richard Saltonstall in a vessel captained by Elias Parkman, who plied the coast from the Bay to Connecticut.

At the General Court on 27 Nov. 1661, "the honored Mr. Bradstreet is called, on the service of the country, to leave his family's occasions & go for England..." " 1661 Feb. 10th Mr. Bradstreet & Mr. Norton with Mr. Davis & Mr. Hull took ship & set sail the next morning." " 3 Sep. 1662, Mr. Bradstreet & Mr. Norton returned from England, bringing with them a gracious letter from his Majesty confirming our Charters & Liberties." In parallel with other New England colonies, Massachusetts Bay saw the need to send representatives to England at the time of the Restoration to see to their "liberties."

John Elliot recorded on 10 Jul. 1666 that "There happened a dreadful burning at Andover. Mr. Bradstreet's house & the greatest part of his goods were burnt. The occasion of which the carelessness of the maid, who put hot ashes into an hogshead over the porch; the tup fired about 2 o'clock in the morning & set the chamber & house on fire."

Simon Bradstreet managed his estate with a farm hand and dealt with reliable people. There was no necessity for him to clog the courts with debt cases, and Bradstreet generally tended to stay on the bench and not before it.

I had eight birds in one nest,

Four cocks there were, and hens the rest;

I nurst them up with pain and care,

Nor cost, nor labour did I spare,

Till at the last they felt their wing,

Mounted the trees, and learn'd to sing.

Notes for JOHN JR. LOOFBOURROW:

John was a cooper (one who makes barrels and casks). He died possibly by accident, for the brevity of his will, which was written on a torn scrap of paper would indicate that it was written "in extermis"; "All my estate to be at my wife's disposal. Eldest son, Wade, 5 shillings." This unfortunate will caused dissension among John's children. The family scattered and his sons adopted different spellings of their name.

John purchased land in Perth Amboy in 1719 from George Wilcox, bordering the property in the tenure of William Harrison, and again in 1724 from George and Margaret Wilcox. In 1726 he was listed as constable for Perth Amboy and in 1738 he witnessed the will of David Lyell of the same place. In 1747 he served as a member of the jury in the case of the King VS. Notes for BRITIMART CONYART SHIFFLETT:

Britimart once told her granddaughter Doris that she woke up one night with her room filled with light. She went to the window, and there stood Jesus outside. Jesus told her to become a 7th Day Adventist, so she did. She also told 3 year old Doris, "if you wet your pants, Jesus will take you down to the fires of hell where you will burn for all eternity." When news came in 1931 that Britimart had been killed, Hallie said, "Good riddance to the old witch." Britimart's death certificate states that she died in an automobile accident of a fractured skull and crushed chest. The accident was in Sidney, Ohio, at the corner of Main Ave. and North St. Her date of birth was given by Mrs. G. A. Wiford as Sept. 24, 1876 - - ten years later than her actual date. Her occupation was given as practical nursing. Britimart and Wiford lived together at 614 North Third Ave. in Sidney. The Miami Valley Genealogical Index web site has an entry of marriage between "Edith R.Shiflet and George A. Wiford" in Shelby Co. in 1887. 1880 4/12. This Edie R. may be the "Eith R."-- married at age 16 to George Wiford.

The Dec. 21, 1931 Sidney Daily news (price, 3 cents) carried the following front-page story:

A bad accident occurred at the corner of Main Ave. and North St. at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon resulting in the death of Mrs. W. F. Baldwin 65 years old of 614 Third Ave., and injuries to Mrs. G. A. Wiford, of the same address, when a Chevrolet auto driven by Mrs. Wiford collided with a south bound Western Ohio car. According to stories told by eyewitnesses, and by Mrs. Wiford herself, she was driving toward the west on her way home. She told officers that she did not notice the traction car until it was too late. She rammed into it. The traction car was in the middle of the street as the amber lights were changing. The auto struck the car with terrific force swerving completely around and struck a pole at the northeast corner of the intersection. Both women were thrown out of the auto into the street, Mrs Wiford through the door and Mrs. Baldwin through the windshield. Aid quickly went to them. They were loaded into Harry Hergenrather's machine, and assisted by J. N. Helpbringer were taken to the hospital. Mrs. Baldwin was dead before the hospital was reached. Her skull was fractured, arms broken and her chest crushed. She never regained consciousness after the crash. Mrs. Wiford was cut about the face and head and suffered greatly from shock.

The traction car in charge of Motorman Elmer Meyers of Piqua, was stopped immediately after the accident. Coroner Becker was called to investigate the accident.

The body of Mrs. Baldwin was taken to Dearth Undertaking Parlor to be prepared for burial. Mrs. Baldwin has been making her home with the Wifords for the past year. She came to Sidney from Boulder, CO. Five children survive her; Nelson and Bertram, Mrs. Stella Hibbard and Mrs. Roy Robinson, of Battle Creek, MI., and Edward of Boulder, CO. A brother, Nelson Shifflet, of Jackson Center, and two sisters, Mrs. G. A. Wiford of Sidney, and Mrs. Leota Drury of 628 Richard St., Dayton, Ohio. Short funeral services will be held at the Wiford home Wednesday morning at 10'oclock.

The remains will then be taken to Jackson Center, where the deceased was born and reared, and where funeral services will be held at the Seventh Day Baptist Church at that place. Burial in Jackson Center Cemetery.

Britimart's obituary was in the Sidney Daily News with a photo of her.

"Funeral Services for Mrs. Baldwin-- Funeral rites for Mrs. W. F. Baldwin, who was killed in the Western Ohio automobile crash Sunday, were held at the Seventh Day Baptist Church at Jackson Center Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock. Rev. Gordon was in charge of the services. Burial was made at Jackson Center, where the deceased had been a resident during most of her life.

"The pall bearers were: her two sons and two son-in-laws, Bertram Baldwin, Nelson Baldwin, Roy Robinson and David Hibbard."

"Among the out of town relatives here for the service were: Mr. & Mrs. Roy Robinson, Mr. & Mrs. Bertram Baldwin, Mr. & Mrs. David Hibbard, Nelson Baldwin, Edward & Henry Robinson, of Battle Creek, MI., Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Katner and two children of Wapakoneta." (Clarence Katner was a descendant of Jefferson and Mary Shiflett.)

Notes for WILLIAM FRANKLIN BALDWIN:

William's death certificate gives his birth date as Sept. 15, 1864. In Civil was pension records, his mother gives his birthday as Nov. 1, Nov. 16, and Dec 16, 1860. She is consistent on the birthdays of the other four children, Why?.

Willie was 2 years old when his father died during service in the Civil War. When he was 6, his mother remarried and William apparently did not accompany her to her new home. She had 4 more children and died when William was 19 years old. He does not appear with her in the 1870 or 1880 census, and I have been unable to find him during that period, although she received a widow pension for him. (There is a William Baldwin in Bethel Township, Miami Co. in 1880. Haven't visited the census to match data with our William.)

He first appears in census records in 1900 (The 1890 census having burned), Living at 360 College Ave., in Jackson Center, Shelby Co., Ohio with 6 children. His occupation is "Day laborer." By 1910 the family in in Bethel Township, Calhoun Co., MI. Most information was illegible. In 1920, the 59 year old is unemployed, renting a room in a boarding house owned by a Canadian named Willoughby Wright. Wright owned the house without mortgage. There were 6 boarders, 3 black and 3 white. One boarder was John Foy a florist at the Sanitarium. Willoughby was a factory electrician.

Doris remembers her grandparents living with her off and on while she was younger. She said Britimart slept with a knife under her pillow because she was afraid of William. She remembers tattling to her grandmother once when she saw her grandfather wipe his nose on a dish towel. They got into a terrific row, and that was the last time Doris remembers seeing him. It seems that Willie was disabled by Grand Mal epilepsy and mentally instable. He checked himself into the State Mental Hospital in Pueblo, Co., on Feb. 21, 1921, saying he was afraid he was going to hurt someone. He died there on July 4, 1926, of "arteriosclerosis." and was buried at Rose Lawn Cemetery, Pueblo, CO.

Notes for WILLIAM H. BALDWIN:

The SABBATH RECORDER, dated Aug. 5, 1907 Vol. 63 #31 Pg. 830.

"William H. Baldwin, second son of Mr. & Mrs. Wm. F. Baldwin was born in Jackson Center, Ohio Dec. 11, 1885 and died from accident on the railroad near Milton Junction, WI.

Some four years age, with other members of the family, he moved to Walworth, WI., and later to Milton Junction. Though deprived of the two great blessings of speaking and hearing, in many respects he was a remarkable young man. His ability to write a legible hand often served him a good purpose when other methods of communication failed. Though not a professing Christian he possessed a marked tendency and affection for the word of God. He was genial and Sympathetic in nature; kind, obliging and unselfish. Funeral services were held in the Milton Junction Seventh-Day Baptist Church, July 1, in charge of the pastor, assisted by Rev. O. S. Mills. The text considered were Prov. 27:1 and Eccl. 12:1. The body was laid to rest in Milton Junction Cemetery.
