Funeral Services for Jay Davis, 65,
Route 3, Hastings, who died at 10:35 P. M. Tuesday at Pennock Hospital, will be
held at 2 P. M. Saturday at the Leonard Funeral Home.
The Rev. Henry Campbell, of Dexter, will
officiate and burial will be in the Ellis Cemetery.
Mr. Davis had been in the hospital three
days prior to his death.
He had resided in Hastings township for
the past seven years and was employed as a boiler fireman at the E. W. Bliss
Company where he was a member of Local 414, UAW-CIO.
He was born July 1, 1888, in Assyria
Township, the son of Alfred and Mary J. (Beach) Davis.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife,
Sarah; three sons, Harold, of Prudenville; Elwood, of Battle Creek, and Earl,
of Bedford; one daughter, Mrs. Glenn (Bernice) Gates, of Battle Creek; nine
grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two step-sons; Howard H. Powell, of Oak
Park, ILL., and Charles W. Powell, of Grand Rapids, and a step-daughter, Miss
Druzella Powell, of Route 3, Hastings.

Services for Harold A. Davis, 64, of Houghton Lake and a
former Battle Creek residence, will be held at 11 A. M. Saturday in Houghton
Lake.
Davis was a native of Battle Creek, residing here for 44 years
until he moved to Houghton Lake in 1952. He attended Battle Creek schools and
had been employed as a mechanic here. He was employed at Houghton Lake as a
Roscommon County Sherriff's Deputy.

BELLEVUE--Mrs Bernice E. (Davis) Gates,
65, of 15060 Dunn Road, was dead on arrival Sunday at Leila Hospital after
being stricken at the home of a relative.
Born in Assyria Center, She was employed
by the Kellogg Co. until her retirement in 1968. She was a member of the
Kellogg 25 year club.
She was the widow of Theron Bissett, who
died in 1955, and Glen Gates, who died in 1967.
Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Thelma J.
Hanley of 219 Birdsall Drive, and Mrs. Alvin (Theda) J. White of Salem Oregon;
a son, Gordon Bissett of 15060 Bellevue; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Junior (Joan)

Davis, 80, of Pennfield Township died Tuesday, October 16, 2001, at her home.
She was born on April 11, 1921, in
Battle Creek to Peter Wilroy Robinson and Bertha Luella (Baldwin) Robinson.
She was a homemaker. For a short time,
she worked in production at Post Cereals. She also had worked on election days
at the Pennfield Township precinct.
She married Elwood J. Davis of Battle
Creek on April 23, 1946 in Battle Creek.
Surviving are her husband, Elwood J.
Davis of Battle Creek, daughters, Demaris L. "Demmy" and William
Mills of Lakeland, FLA., and Debbie A. Davis of Waveland, MISS.; sons, Elwood
J. (wife Lori) Davis Jr. of Hickory Corners and James H. (wife Kathy) Davis of
Battle Creek; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and three great-great
grandchildren.
Irene was preceded in death by her
father, Peter Wilroy Robinson in 1975; her mother, Bertha Luella (Baldwin)
Robinson in 1976; three brothers, Edward W. Robinson (1963), Henry D. Robinson
and Franklin J. Robinson (February 2000); and a sister, Helen L. Madsen.
She attended Battle Creek schools and
was a lifelong resident of the Battle Creek area. She and her husband traveled
in their motorhome to Florida during winters. She enjoyed working on crafts,
especially ceramics, rug hooking and needlepoint work. She was an avid NASCAR
fan and collected many mementos of Dale Earnhardt's car No. 3. She enjoyed
fishing, watching Tiger baseball games and attending the Battle Cats games. She
loved her dogs. When she was younger, she went roller-skating and bowling. She
was a den mother for Cub Scouts in Ceresco when her sons were young.
Visitation will be after 9 a.m. today at
the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service, where the family will be present from noon
to 2 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
Service will be 9:30 a.m. Friday,
October 19, 2001, in the Bachman Funeral Chapel with Pastor Harold P. Goff of
Temple Baptist Church and Mr. Richard Robinson officiating.
Interment in Fort Custer National
Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Lifespan-Good
Samaritan Hospice Care.

Earl H. Davis Sr., 72, of Battle Creek,
died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1996, at Arboridge Care Center.
Born Nov. 1, 1924, in Assyria Township
to Jay and Sadie (Penfold) Davis, he graduated from Bedford School and was a
lifelong resident.
He owned and operated Davis Service
Stations and also owned a used-car dealership, retiring in August 1996. He also
was employed by Emmerson Moving and Storage as a truck driver, was a Bedford
Township firefighter in the 1940s and 1950s, and was a messenger with Security
Bank in the 1960s.
He married Ruth P. Ashbaugh on Oct. 22,
1942. She died Nov. 10, 1993.
He was also preceded in death by a
brother, Harold Davis; and a sister, Bernice Gates.
Surviving are sons, Earl Davis Jr. and
Robert Davis of Battle Creek; a daughter, Marilyn Sue Lutz of Battle Creek;
four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Elwood Davis of
Battle Creek

Enjoyed building race
cars, welding crafts, teaching his grandchildren to fish, and fish frys; he was
an expert fisherman.

MERLE W. DAVIS
Merle W. Davis, 82, of Assyria Township,
Bellevue, died Sunday October 22, 1995, in Battle Creek Health System/Community
Site.
Mr. Davis was born Feb. 5, 1913 in
Assyria Township to William and Anna (Miller) Davis.
He was employed from 1931 to 1956 as
service manager at Cushman Chevrolet in Battle Creek. He then was employed from
1956 to 1960 by Holmes Buick and later worked at Stan Lassen Pontiac-Cadillac
and DeMaagd Oldsmobile. He retired in 1975 from Greenfield American Motors.
He married Ora E. Johnson on August 17,
1931 in Banfield. She survives.
Also surviving are sons, Milburn and
Donald Davis of Bellevue, Neil and Darrell Davis of Dowling and Marvin Davis od
Deland, Fla.; daughters, Jean Ashdon of Hastings, Nancy Wallace of Bellevue and
Janet Fender of Vermontville; 30 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; two
great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Larry Davis of Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by a son,
Norman Davis; a daughter, Gloria; a brother, Wayne Davis; a sister, Irene
Gellespie.
Community involvements, hobbies:
Was a Member of the
National Rifle Association, Enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushrooming, snowmobiling
and traveling.

STOCK CAR FLIPS,
CERESCO MAN HURT
Richard T. Bissett, 34, of Route 1,
Ceresco, was injured critically when a stock car he was testing flipped onto
its side and pinned him on the 11-Mile Road between B Drive North and B Drive
South. The accident occurred about 8:15 P. M. Saturday.
Mr. Bissett suffered head and chest
injuries and was reported in "critical" condition last night in Leila
Hospital's intensive care unit. His son, Richard W., 13, injured, but to a
lesser degree, was reported in "fair" condition.
According to a sherriff's deputy, Mr.
Bissett was working on a modified stock car and was trying it out to adjust the
timing. The car left the road, swerved back across the roadway and flipped,
pinning Mr. Bissett. The deputy said that the right rear axle was broken. The
sherriff said it has not been determined who was driving. The accident is still
under investigation.

STOCK CAR RACER
DIES OF INJURIES
Richard T. Bissett, 34, of Route 1,
Ceresco, father of five, who was injured Saturday night when a stock car he was
testing overturned on its side and pinned him beneath it, died at 2:30 A. M.
Sunday in Leila Hospital.
His son, Richard W., 13, also injured in
the accident on the 11-Mile Road near B Drive South, remained in fair condition
today in Leila Hospital.
A sherriff's deputy said it is believed
that the boy was driving the stock car while his father was on the left side
adjusting the timing of the car. The deputy said the boy apparently lost
control of the car after it started.
A mechanic employed by William Gresley
of B Drive South, brother-in-law of Mr. Bissett, was pushing the car with
another car when the stock car started up and its speed moved from about 35
miles per hour to 50 miles per hour.
The mechanic, James Powers, said he saw
the dust fly and when he reached the scene, he saw the car overturned and
pinned Mr. Bissett. He and others lifted the car off him and called for an
ambulance.
The stock car was owned by Mr. Gresley.
He told deputies that he, Mr. Bissett, Mr. Powers and others had been working
on it for several days.
Deputies said further investigation is
necessary because of a report that Mr. Bissett was actually the driver.
Mr. Bissett's death is the 26th traffic
fatality in Calhoun County this year.
Mr. Bissett was in stock car racing for
some 16 years and had been a mechanic for the past 10 years. He was a crane
operator for the Grand Trunk Western Railroad. He was also a member of the
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. From 1949 to 1951 he was a
member of the Naval Reserve.
He was born in Bedford, Jan. 12, 1932,
son of Theron Leroy and Bernice Elma Bissett. He married Nancy Caryl Gresley on
Oct. 28, 1950, in Battle Creek.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons,
Richard, 13 and Ronald G., 11; three daughters, Darlene Laura, 15; Dawn Kay,
14, and Kim Marie, 5; his mother, Mrs. Glenn (Bernice) Gates of Bellevue; two
sisters, Mrs. Gerald (Thelma) Hanley of 21780 6-Mile Rd., and Mrs. Alvin
(Theda) White of 26 Shirley St.; two stepsisters, Mrs. Junior (Joan) Shreve of
Marshall and Mrs. Lloyd (Pricilla) Katuskey of Hutchinson Rd.; a brother,
Gordon Bissett of 189 Swedish Drive; two stepbrothers, Charles Gates of 72
Morgan Ave., and Jerry Gates of 76 Shirley St..; several aunts and uncles and
several nieces and nephews.

Darrel Lee Davis, 60, of Assyria
Township died Friday, July 21, 2000, at Pennock Hospital, Hastings.
He was born June 1, 1940, to Merle W.
and Ora E. (Johnson) Davis.
He lived in Dowling for 39 years.
He attended Ann J. Kellogg School in
Battle Creek and was a member of the Bellevue High School Marching Band.
He was owner and operator of Darrel
Davis Masonry, work he did for 40 years. He was also owner and operator of
Davis and Sons Tractor Business from 1979 to 1982 and was a bus driver for
Hastings Area Schools for 23 years, retiring in 1996.
He married Carolyn M. Brandt of Dowling
on March 18, 1961, in his parents house in Assyria Township. She survives.
Also surviving are mother, Ora E. Davis
of Bellevue; seven grandchildren; sons, Jeffrey L. Davis and Scott A. Davis,
both of Dowling, and Richard T. Davis of Nashville; brothers, Milburn M. Davis
and Donald C. Davis, both of Bellevue, Neil D. Davis of Dowling and Marvin E.
Davis of DeLand, FL.; sisters, N. Jean Ashdon of Hastings, Nancy A. Wallace of
Bellevue and Janet E. Fender of Vermontville.
He was preceded in death by his father
in 1995; brother Norman Davis in infancy; sister Gloria M. Davis in infancy and
a grandson in 1983.
