Access to the Events Database is absolutely free and can be viewed by anyone on the Net, around the world. There is no charge to submit data and no charge to retrieve it and gain contact information.

All entries are arranged by Soundex of the last name and searches by Soundex will yield a list of all names matching the Soundex code. This feature becomes especially helpful when a Soundex code covers names that are mostly related, such as P330, which includes Pettit, Poteete and Petet. However, it also means that Steward and Struthers are found together. An 'exact match' option has been added to remedy that problem. Searches can be conducted by last name only or by first and last name. Wildcards can not be included.

You do not need to create an account to browse and retrieve data. In fact, users having no submissions in the database will be deleted from the password file.

You do need an account to enter your data and later update/delete it. Access to the delete function is password protected. Anyone on the Net having a legitimate email address can create an account at no charge.

Each record consists of a name, an event (such as birth, marriage and death) and its place and date. The fields are restricted to varying length and content. The day field can only be one or two numeric characters. The year can contain an 'a' (after), 'b' (before) or 'c' (circa) as the first character or a question mark as the last character. The other data can contain only alphabetic characters, spaces, question marks (?), apostrophes ('), double quotation marks (") or hyphens (-).

This is not meant to be a collection of verified genealogical data. It is intended only to be a means by which Netters can readily find others working on the same lines. It is because of this limited scope that there will not be the capability to add more detail to each record. And, of course, as the database grows, disk space can become a critical factor.
