Two styles of downrigger line releases. The one on the left is attached to the cannonball by a leader and the line from the rod is gripped between the rubber pads after a loop is made in the line by twisting it 3 times. The one on the right can be attached to the cannonball as well as the downrigger cable. It can also be used to stack another rod to the same downrigger. The line passes between rubber pads and then clipped on the bottom of the verticle bar in the middle of the release. Both releases work well but require some trial and error to get the tensions set right.
