Upon entering the Church we were handed the Wedding Program with the following words on it:
I dreamed of a wedding of elaborate elegance...
A church filled with flowers and friends...
I ask him what kind of wedding he wished for...
He said one the would make me his wife
Thema and I along with hundreds of others, on this hot 24th of July 1999, were privileged to be the guest of, Sarah Anne Manson and Mark James Gruen, as they exchanged wedding vows before Pastor Daniel Dibbers in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wilton.
As I sat there in the jam packed church and listened to the lovely solo's sung by, Janet Baseman, and watched the young couple exchange their wedding vows,it made me think of the past week where another young couple were about to exchange their wedding vows and tragedy struck and the wedding was called off replaced by a memorial service for close relatives of the wedding party.
The wedding of Sarah & Mark was in essence just the opposite. A year or so ago tragedy also came to Mark Gruen's family, when in a period of a few months his Mother, Grandmother, and two Aunts all died. There was no national news media here to cover their sorrowful events and yet to those people and this community it was as painful to them as what happened at Martha's vineyard a week ago this day.
The brides dream of a " wedding of elaborate elegance, a church filled with flowers and friends was certainly in evidence. As the beautiful bride to be came down the aisle on the arm of her father, who presented her to the groom to be, her early question of what kind of wedding he wished for... "one that would make me his wife" came about within minutes, shortly after repeating their vows, Pastor Dibbert pronounced them man and wife.
As some of you know I did a lot of wedding photography in my 20 years in the
photography business and I was always amazed by the planning and beauty of most
weddings , the devotion of the two people involved, who in most cases honestly
believed that "until death do us part" was a lifelong commitment they would always
keep. Out of the many weddings I took over that 20 year period, I sensed very few
which I did not think would
honor that commitment.
Our congratulations toSarah and Markon this new adventure together.
To Their Parents,
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Manson
Mr. Robert Gruen and the late Karen Gruen.
Grandparents
Mrs. Leila Friskie,
Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Renor
Mrs. Betty Herricks.
In the Wedding Party were:
A reception and dance was held at the Legion Hall in Elroy.
Mark & Sarah are just one in thousands of couples who will take this path this year, a process that has been going on for thousands of years and has to this date created over six billion inhabitants on this planet.
Wedding occur all year around but most of them take place during the summer months of June, July and August. Perhaps we can relate weddings to the summer season of our lives.
In spite of the 95 degrees summer heat it was a lovely wedding and Thema and I thank you, Sarah and Mark, for the Invitation to be with you on this very important day in your lives.

The Keystone Reporter was a combination of the Kendall Keystone and the Wonewoc Reporter. How many of you can remember when Oliver Witte, from his printing office in the basement of Hotel Kendall, put forth the Kendall Keystone? Then Phil Egan bought it and moved it to Elroy.
Present editor Bill Smith, gives this farwell:
MY SINCERE APPRECIATION
And so this corner comes to and end. There really
is not much more to say at this point, than "thank you."
I particulary want to thank Bill Griffith for giving me the chance to work in these communities some 12 years ago. And I want to thank SCWN (South Central Wisconsin Newspapers, Inc)for keeping me on after they bought the newspaper. Thanks to all my co-workers through the years for their support and help.
But most of all, I want to thank those readers who put up with me over the years and welcomed this newspaper and me as editor into their communities. I can truthfully say I have enjoyed living and working in these communities more than any place I have been.
For the most part it has been fun, and I willingly accept the rest.
Again, thanks everyone. It has been great!

Monroe County Retired Teachers Association held their June 14th meeting in the new
McCoy building, at Fort McCoy in conjunction with the
Army's Flag Day Program.
A brief business meeting was held and Annette Owen, President introduced the two new
retirees, Judy Richmond - Sparta Area Schools and Deanna Lenz - Tomah Area Schools
who had been invited to join the
Monroe County Retired Teachers Association.
Eunice Berg, President Elect, of the Wisconsin Retired Educators Association
(WREA)http://www.wrea.net/
then spoke briefly of some of the advantages of being a member of the association.
Among which was monthly meeting of ones fellow peers, the chance to keep updated on
what is happening in the educational field and the part the Retired Teachers play in seeing
that the retirement that they have contributed to all their lives is keep on track. She related
how back a few years ago the Governor and legislature took from the Teachers Retirement
Fund monies to bail out American Motors. How it took a long court fight by the Teachers
Retirement Association to get the money back as the State had the idea that they
could use such monies as part of the General Fund. It was finally resolved a few years ago
when they got it all back along with all the interest due over that time. "It was because of
the persistent and hard work by the teachers association, that we were able to recover the
money that belong to our members", Ms Berg said. She invited the two new retirees to
consider seriously of
joining the local and state organization.
It then was time for a buffet dinner and since the meeting was being held in the dining area we just went out to the serving area, choosing what we wanted from a tremendous array of entrees.
The Fort McCoy Public Relations Department, under the leadership, Linda Fournier, and
staff, then presented a June 14th Flag Day Commemoration. This was followed by a
very interesting and informative slide show history of Fort McCoy, narrated by, Executive
Officer, Al Fournier, depicting the growth of Camp Robinson in 1909 to the present day
1999 Fort McCoy. (For those interested they have a Commerative Issue,
magazine/newspaper, available which gives yearly details. If interested contact the Public
Relations Office - Phone 608-388-2407)
After the very interesting program put on by the Public Relations Dept. the Retired
Teachers then had their yearly drawing for a one year membership. Aleda Moseley,
being this years winner.
Then for all that wished there was a bus tour of Fort McCoy. For many of us this was
quite an experience. Although I have lived in this area most of my life I did not realize the
magnitude of the Fort McCoy operation. The tour was a bit over an hour long including
a stop at the new Fort McCoy museum. We saw only the tip of the iceberg , there were
facilities for teaching trainees about every aspect of modern war. There were acres and
acres of military equipment, parade grounds, even sand pits where trainees learned how
to get their tanks or other vehicles out quickly after getting mired. The tour was moderated
by Ruth West.
We stopped by the new Museum before returning to our cars. This is the
first year that the Museum has been open to the public and as Linda said, "It takes time but
we are getting there." It is very nicely laid out and has much to give for those interested
in the history of Fort McCoy.
This is how about 40 Teacher Retirees and their spouses spent
