Tour To Peru -- Questions Commonly Asked

Q: I would like to go on a vacation in a warm place, but I’m not the type to lay on the beach. What is the best tour for me?

A: Most of our tours are active, although the Peru Winter Getaway allows for that “lay on the beach” time that so many crave in the winter. If you are interested in seeing amazing ruins and learning about ancient cultures, then any of our tours that include Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Arequipa or Northern Peru will suit you. We have side trips to the jungle wildlife preserves that can be added to any tour (ask for details).

Q: I want to go on a tour where I can see some spectacular ruins and wildlife, and then have lots of time to relax and lay on the beach. Which tour is for me?

A: Definitely the Winter Getaway. That tour ends on the ocean seeing the “Galapogos of Peru” and you can take the Extended Option that gives you extra days to just relax in the warmth of an unspoiled, non-touristy sandy beach setting.

Q: I am an active person and a horseman / horsewoman. Do you have a tour for me?

A: Definitely, the April Tour that includes all or part of the National Horse Show is your choice. During this tour we have numerous optional opportunities to ride wonderful Peruvian naturally gaited horses. You can ride on the beach, or even in the Sacred Valley in the Cusco-Machu-Picchu portion of the tour.

Q: I would like to go to Peru, but have no traveling companion.  Can I room with someone?

A: Sometimes we have people traveling “solo” and are able to match temperaments and habits quite well.  Please specify smoking or non-smoking. If no roommate can be found for you, the single supplement applies.

Q: What documents do I need?

A: A valid passport for citizens of the United States & Canada. Others may need a visa.

Q: Are there opportunities for shopping?

A: Many, many, many. There will be shopping trips planned to the Indian Market which is the source for sweaters, rugs and silver items.  Antique stores abound in Lima, and we can direct you to the best areas. Those who visit Cusco and other locales will find additional sources for alpaca and silver, sweaters, blankets and a wealth of street artists.

Q: Do I need to get vaccinations?

A: Check with your doctor or local health unit. Most travellers get current on their Tetanus shot, some also get Hep A & B.  If you are taking a jungle trip you will probably need a Yellow Fever vaccine.

Q: When do I purchase my ticket?

A: We taking deposits four to eight months in advance to lock in our prices.  The basic tour package must be paid sixty days before we embark.

Q: May I pay with a credit card?

A: PayPal is the preferred secure method with a credit card, and through that service we can accept VISA, Mastercard, American Express or Discover cards. We can accept Visa or Mastercard by direct payment – see form. We have arranged no extra service charge for these credit cards when used before the trip.  Any extras paid in Peru on credit card may be subject to an additional service charge.

Q: Can I access Interac or other bank machines in Peru?

A: There are Automated Teller machines in Miraflores which MAY access your bank account and give you Peruvian or American money.  This depends on where you bank.  PLEASE do not count on bank machines!

Q: Should I take travellers’ cheques or cash?

A: Cash and other valuables may be secured in the hotel safe. Smaller denomination Travellers’ cheques may be used in many places, sometimes subject to a cashing fee.  Cashing large ones have to be done at a a bank, and it is a lengthy process which can take several hours, even if they are American Express! Your I.D. will have to be faxed to the United States and confirmation received before you will receive any cash.

Q: What charges will I be responsible for at the hotel?

A: Meals other than the continental breakfast, faxes, bar tab, laundry, and extra assistance for the doormen or staff.  Also plan for lunches and dinners and a small amount of cab fare.

Q: How much money will I need for incidentals and meals?

A: Many people find that $25.00 per day per person will buy lunches and dinners at normal restaurants, bottled water, snacks, and cab fare. This of course depends on where you eat, and you can spend more if you wish.

Q: Can I visit the Nasca Lines?

A: Yes, this can be a day-trip. Our agent can arrange a flight to Ica, then a small plane (with an American pilot) will take you over one of the Wonders of the World!  Fascinating (not recommended if you are prone to airsickness!)

Q: May I stay longer than the trip dates?

A: That can be arranged in advance.  Under some circumstances, your stay can be extended once in Peru (a change fee may apply). Check for price depending on where you would like to stay.

Q: If I stay longer, what would I do?

A: There are numerous options that could include days on the beach, horseback riding, visits to other ancient sites, or additional historical sites in Lima, Cusco or other city.

Q: Do I have to very physically fit to enjoy the tours?

A: Most of the tours involve some walking. Any walking or ascending stairs on the high altitude tours is done slowly. People of all ages and levels of physical fitness have enjoyed the tours, but you will get the most out of the experience if you are accustomed to walking. Many people prepare for the tours by doing a brisk half-hour walk 3 days a week or other mild aerobic exercise.

Q: I want to take one of the high-altitude tours. How do I avoid altitude sickness?

A: Talk to your doctor about your concerns before traveling. Some doctors prescribe pills to prevent altitude sickness. The most important way to avoid altitude sickness is to rest when recommended by your tour guide, walk slowly and drink plenty of fluids. Ask for additional information on high altitude travel elsewhere on the website.

Q: How will I know what to pack for my trip?

A: There will be packing lists available by email, fax or mail, to assist you in planning.  Be sure to ask for this in the form you prefer.

Q: How do I get on the list to reserve my space or to receive further tour information?

A: Feel free to ask any questions you may have  - call, write or email.
