Witchblades 1.5 Tournie Report

I had planed to attend a type 1.5 tournament on August 3rd. I had been messing with different deck types the week before, and had settled on a red/white deck with blue/green splashed in for Erhnams and Serendibs. While it worked well when I drew the correct land it seemed inconsistent. I would occasionally have either Erhnams or Serendibs sitting in my hand the whole game when I tested the deck. So at 2:00 in the morning, the night before the tournament I decided to get rid of the Serendibs and put in River Boas. I tested this deck for ahile against my other decks, and decided that I would need to get some rest. Here is the deck I ended up using:

Red:

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Incinerate
4 Kird Ape
2 Kaervek's Torch

White:

4 Swords to Plowshares
3 Disenchant
2 Wrath of God
2 Savannah Lions

Green:

4 Erhanm Djinn
4 River Boa

Land:

3 Kjeldoran Outpost
2 Thawing Glaciers
4 Savannah
4 Taiga
2 Plateau
2 Undiscovered Paridise
5 Mountains
4 Plains
1 Forest
I could tell that the tournament wasn't organized very well. We would play 12 different people, one game apiece. Then whoever has the best record wins. If there was a tie in wins then whoever had the most average lifepoints wins. This made me mad seeing that my sideboard would be useless.

Game 1

R/U/G
My opponent had a really great deck. Mostly large creatures mixed with countering and burn. He goes first. I drop a taiga and an ape on my turn. He bolts my ape. I play a boa. he bolts it. He plays a land and lets me go. I cast a boa and he mana drains it. Next turn he plays a land and uses the mana from the drain to cast a mahomotti. I incinerate and bolt it but he force of wills one. The mahomotti and a serendib on the next turn mean the end of the game for me.

0-1

Game 2

R/G/B Land Destruction

He gets one land in his opening hand. He gets out one more land before kirds, boas, and soldiers kill him off.

1-1

Game 3

R/W

My opponent was a really nice guy, but his deck just didn't cut it. He had trouble getting land at first. When he fianlly got his deck going I saw he was using castles, COPs standard, and a bunch of other things. Eventually Wennies kill him while I plow and bolt his creatures. After the Game he showed me the 3 Two-Headed Giants in his deck. I'm still wondering about thst deck.

2-1

Game 4

Black Swarm

He had quite a few creatures in the deck. I would estimate about 30. I hold off his creatures with burn and plows for awhile. We both have a couple of creatures out, and we keep trading damage untill I finally draw a wrath of god. I cast it and my next draw just happens to be a kjeldroan outpost. An erhnam and some soldier tokens take him down.

3-1

Game 5

Big Blue

This was one of my best challenges of the night. I take him down to about 8, and then his offense comes in. Six snake tokens. They hold of my creatures off for awile untill he gets out an air elemental. This creates a problem since my deck can't block fliers. Eventually I get him to 3 life when his illusions of granduer comes out. He now had 23 life, plenty of land and I didn't have a disenchant in sight. Eventually I torch his elemental and take down all 23 life. Another turn or two and I would be dead considering that I was at 5. After the game he showed me he had a Psionic Blast in his hand, but it would have killed him, and only brought me to 1.

4-1

Game 6

U/W Prison

I got a great hand, and pouned on him for quite a while. I disenchanted his Icy and he never drew a winter orb. Death by wennies.
5-1

Game 7

R/B

No specific theme. I'm guessing he was a beginer because he only got out a bog wraith (which I bolted) before he died.

6-1

Game 8

White Wennie

My deck was designed to take out weenies, and I was totally prepared to play this deck. I took down every weenie with burn and plows, and swarmed him with soldier tokens and 2 apes before he ever saw a wrath of god.

7-1

Game 9

Mono Red

At first I was expecting sligh, because he cast an ironclaw on turn 2, but the thing is that was the only creature he ever cast. I got out plenty of weenies and a post. He earthquaked for 1. That was the only damage he did to me all game. I get more weenies and tokens and he had no answer for them.

8-1

Game 10

White Wennie

Another WW deck. He starts playing some pretty week weenies like benalish hero. I didn't see any knights at all I take the game easily. Not much else to say.
9-1

Game 11

Mono Black

A pretty bad deck, but what was worse is that he was totally lacking any skill. He casts a mire Shade and sacs all his swamps to it to make it 5/5. I plow it. I kill him with creatures and burn while he never saw another land the whole game.

10-1

Game 12

Green Weenie

As I said earlier my deck was designed to stop weenies and this was no exception. I neutralized his creatures that couldn't be targeted by spells or effects (centaurs and insects) with boas and soldier tokens. I plowed and burnt the others. I eventually win with about ten tokens, and some burn to finish him off.

11-1

Overall I was very happy with my performance, although the general field wasn't that challenging. I took second place overall winning a regular balduvian horde and a giant arena league balduvian horde. The winner of the tournament had the same record as me, but because he was playing 4 gerrard's wisdoms his end life total was higher. I plan to write a report for a type 2 vanguard tournament that I will be attending in a month, so look out for it.
