History Of York, PA 


York City is a historic city in Pennsylvania, USA which was incorporated on January 11, 1887. The city has a total landmass of 13.84 km², of which 13.71 km² is dry land and 0.13 km² is covered by water. The city also known as the White Rose City or York town in the mid 18th to early 19th century, is the county seat of York County.


York City was founded in 1741 by people who came into the city from Philadelphia to settle. It was named after Yorkshire in England. Majority of those who lived in the city by 1777 were either of Scots-Irish or German descent. On September 24, 1787, the town was incorporated as borough, and later incorporated as a city on January 11, 1887. Between 1775 to 1783, the city was the capital of the Continental Congress, although this was temporal during the American Revolutionary War.



Although many historians consider the city to be the fourth capital of the United States of America, many others refer to it as the first capital of the country. The city which is currently the eleventh most populous city in Pennsylvania was ranked amongst the first hundred most populous urban areas between 1800 through 1840, according to the United States Census Bureau.


During 1861 down to 1865, the time of the American Civil War, the city became the largest Northern town which was inhabited by the Confederate army on June 28 to June 30, when the division of Major General Jubal Anderson Early stayed in and around the town, during the march of the brigade of John B. Gordon to and fro the Susquehanna River at Wrightsville.
