Volleyball
Volleyball was
created on February 9, 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts by William
G. Morgan who was a YMCA physical education director. The new
game was called Mintonette . The game he
created had characteristics of handball, tennis, baseball and
basketball. The first volleyball net was only 6'6'' because it
was borrowed from tennis. The USVBA (United States Volleyball
Association) was formed in 1928. The first beach volleyball association
was formed in California in 1965. The professional players formed
their own association called the AVP (American Volleyball Professionals)
in 1983.
During the 1984
Los Angeles Olympics, American men and women took gold and silver
medals in many indoor volleyball competitions. In 1996 2 man beach
volleyball was finally introduced into the Olympics. Worldwide
