Imagine a safari in Kenya and what comes to mind instantly is Masai Mara or the Great Migration. But that's not all there is to going on safari in this equatorial country, with its diverse flora, fauna, bird and marine life, amazing variations in topography and great range of accommodation, from budget to luxury.

Some of the safari destinations in Kenya other than Masai Mara are:

Amboseli National Park: About four hours away from Nairobi by air, this park on Kenya's southern safari circuit, Amboseli lies in Kenya's panoramic Rift Valley. This park is renowned for its huge concentrations of elephants. Other animals here are the cape buffalo, zebra, impala, giraffe, wildebeest etc and also a great number of predators like lion, cheetah and leopard. Amboseli is also rich in bird-life. However, the dry, volcanic soil makes it impossible to visit during the rains.

Tsavo: Again on the southern circuit, which is less crowded, Tsavo East is still wild and unspoilt by the ravages of Man. Located about 10 hours away from Nairobi, a trip to Tsavo can be combined with a beach holiday in Mombasa which is nearer. The riverine landscape provides great sightings of hippos, crocodiles and a host of mammals who come to the banks of the river to drink and cool off.

Aberdare Park: Famous for being home to the Treetops Lodge and its associations with British Royalty, Aberdare is also known for its scenic waterfalls. Black leopard, rhinos and bongo antelope are the rare species you can spot here. There are beautiful hiking trails through the park and the weather remains pleasant due to frequent rains.

Nairobi National Park: If you're in Nairobi on business and don't have much time to spare for a long safari, this is the best option. The park is located in the heart of Nairobi city and offers the business traveler a few hours of leisure. There are also walking trails here, with great sightings of the Big Five, and hundreds of bird species. Black rhino is the specialty here, with a huge population of wildebeest and zebra.

Lewa: This private park offers unique safaris like camel-back and walking safaris besides the traditional 4x4 trucks. Home to the endangered Grevy's zebra and sitatunga, there are plenty of other animal species and birds to provide an exciting game run. Accommodation ranges from luxury to budget here within the park and also outside.

Lake Nakuru: the biggest of the Rift Valley soda lakes, this is the habitat of millions of gorgeous flamingos and also of animals like the warthog, hippo, white rhinos, ostrich and lions. Huge pythons can also be sighted here. Day tours from Nairobi can be organized or it can form part of a safari circuit that includes the Masai Mara.
