Glory! Glory! Truth On the March

Goal:

Working with your partner, examine the following resources timelines, maps and charts in web-based resources showing events leading to the raid of John Brown and his supporters at Harper’s Ferry. Use this information to create a brochure to distribute to your neighbors to persuade them to join your cause.

Role:

As abolitionists living in New Jersey in November of 1860, you have received much news of the raid on Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. You want to use his brave action to gather support from your neighbors to help abolish slavery.

Audience:

This pamphlet is for all the people living in your region – businesspersons, farmers, factory workers and small business owners.

Situation:

Some of your neighbors own slaves, and many have friends and relatives that do. There are mixed feelings about slavery, arguments frequent, and the wrong move could divide the community even further.

Product:

Use the information to write a pamphlet illustrating how John Brown and his actions at Harpers Ferry were necessary for human freedom.

Begin at the PBS site “John Brown’s Holy War”. Examine the timeline, map, and read about John Brown and one other person. Chose two other sources; be sure to include the site and address for each document you and your partners are using for the basis of your questions.

Standards and Criteria:

Write a pamphlet explaining the northern attitudes toward John Brown and his raid on Harpers Ferry. Organize information to support your conclusion of how John Brown's actions strengthened the northern resolve to abolish slavery. Be sure to include

  • A map, diagram or other primary source related to the incident
  • Information about an event that lead to the raid
  • Explanation of what immediate action resulted from the raid
  • Your conclusion and supporting evidence (at least one - third of the pamphlet)
