Self Storage – Storing Computers and Electronics Properly

When you relocate, you just might find yourself in need of storing some of your belongings while you’re getting your new house ready for settling in. If computers and electronics are among the things you plan to store for a certain period of time, then you’ll have to learn how to safely store these items. Remember that unlike furniture, computers and electronics require special care when being stored to make sure they’re still in good working condition when you finally bring them home.

One of the most important things you need to do to protect your computers and electronic items in storage is to choose the right facility and unit. Find a facility with indoor units and choose one that has a climate-control feature. This type of storage unit helps prevent corrosion and cracks that typically cause serious damage to electrical components. You should also make sure the facility you choose keeps out dampness in their units, particularly if the area you moved into has a humid climate. Moisture can also damage electronics when left unchecked.

Before you place your computers into storage, be sure to back up all important information contained therein. Remove tapes from VCRs and other devices, and CDs/DVDs from computer drives and CD/DVD players. Protect your electronic items by covering them with canvas or cotton sheets; NEVER use plastic covers to protect computers and electronic items. You’ll only end up damaging them, as plastic traps moisture. Wherever possible, you should store electronic devices in their original box.

It is also a good idea to place pallets and boards on the floor of the storage unit so as to keep your computers and electronic items as far from the floor as possible. Protect the screens of your computer by wrapping them in bubble wraps or placing a piece of cardboard against them. You should also mark the sides where the glass parts are with FRAGILE so you’ll be reminded not to place heavy and/or sharp objects on top of or against them.

Of course, it would be best if you avoided placing electronic items into storage in the first place. No matter how messy your house is during the first week or so of moving in, it would still be a much safer place for your computers. But if you feel that storage is really necessary, then it’s best to keep the above tips in mind when you store your electronics.
