These are the colours of pride -- Sudbury Spartan Pride.
The Spartans played in the Northern Football Conference (NFC) against Oakville Longhorns, Oshawa Hawkeyes, Milton Marauders, Toronto Maddogs, Tri City Outlaws, North Bay Bulldogs, Sault Ste. Marie Steelers, Kingston Privateers, Toronto Raiders and Sarnia Imperials.
The Spartans Football Club was the longest, continously-operating sports organization in Sudbury (est. 1952).
The genesis of the team lies back more in June, 1954 when Sudbury joined North Bay and New Liskeard to form the Northern Rugby Football Union, the predecessor to the NFC.
Originally named "Hardrocks" to reflect the Sudbury's predominant mining industry, the moniker was changed to "Spartans" in 1967 by then rookie Head Coach Sid Forster who felt the old name sounded more like a street gang then a football team.
In that time, the people who have organized and played for the team have set unmatched standards of excellence. No NFC team has won as many championships (18) as the Sudbury Spartans. Many of the Spartans have gone on to play in the collegiate and professional ranks.
