The discipline of Biology is sometimes referred to as "the life sciences." Biology includes, Zoology (study of animals), Botany (study of plants) and Microbiology (study of microorganisms).
The systematic study of biology began with Aristotle. Greek texts remained the principle source of knowledge for some 1800 years.
During the 19th century the major developments centered on the chemistry of life (see Bichat, Magendie, Bernard); and evolutionary biology (see Lamark and Darwin ). The implications of the work of Mendel was not appreciated until early in the 20th century. The study of disease was advanced by the introduction of bacteriology (see Pasteur; Koch).
