SMHAM holds free annual safe riding lessons

The Shark Motorcycle Helmet Association of Malaysia (SMHAM) has held its free annual safe motorcycle riding lessons this time in three cities in the country. Last year and the years before they just hold the annual lessons within the capital, but now, they have conducted the safe riding session in Kuala Lumpur, and two other cities. SMHAM Executive Director Aijad Ibrahim says this is part of widening the safe riding advocacy that they have consistently pursued for the past 30 years.

“We just want to reach more motorcycle riders because we want a lot of people to be aware of safe riding practices. Not everyone are aware of all these, and even those who know may need a refresher. We are also in it for the multiplier effect because when they ride safely, they also encourage safety in the highways,” Ibrahim says.

During the safe riding lessons, those wanting to learn how to ride a motorbike, as well as those who have been riding for quite some time are invited through local motorcycle stores and accessories shops that they patronize. The sessions are half day each, with two sessions per city. There are actual exercises, demonstrations, and lecture type discussions. International Motorcycling Foundation

“We have specifically invited industry experts, motorcycle enthusiasts, and safety advocates who are also members of our group to speak and teach mini modules during the half day discussion. Each lesson ended with a free lunch or dinner depending on the session that they joined.

SMHAM says they are happy with the turn out this year, saying having educated about 200 riders per city is already a big feat, especially since most of the riders that joined are those new to motorcycling.  “We are happy that they took advantage of these free motorcycle safety riding lessons because that certainly shows their commitment to their own safety, their passenger’s and that of everyone on the road. It is good that they are concerned about themselves and other motorists out there,” Ibrahim enthuses. Shark Helmets

Motorcycle Legal Foundation meantime published safety tips for new motorcycle riders. After discussing the importance of motorcycle helmets and safety gears, it also mentioned several practices riders should take whenever they are on the road.

“Conduct a Pre-ride Inspection. When you’re ready to hit the open road, take a few minutes to check your motorcycle to ensure it’s ready to ride. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has an acronym called T-CLOCS (Tires/wheels, Controls, Lights/electrics, Oils/fluids, Chassis, and Stands) to use as a guideline on what to check during your pre-ride inspection. We advise you to go through this inspection every time before you ride.”
