Roofing Scams to watch out for As a home owner you have a responsibility to take care of your home; however some people have discovered ways to trick homeowners into spending money on things that are of zero benefit to you and your home.

This means that to protect your home and your hard earned money you should educate yourself and become enlightened about existing scams.

To replace or repair

The biggest difference between roof repair and replacement is roof replacement costs more. This means that a contractor stands to make more money off you if you decide to replace.

There are roofers who will take advantage of this, therefore if a roofer recommends that you replace your roof you should first get a second opinion before you do it. Make sure you consult a good roofing contractor.

Door to door salesmen

Let’s assume that a salesman comes to your door and offers you a free roof or you come home and find a brochure left on your doorknob. Most people will dismiss the salesman but a few will fall for it.

It is important to understand that scammers will pose as professionals; some will even refer you to their websites and they will offer you low prices or guarantee you that insurance companies are paying out big time.

If your roof is not in a good state you might fall for the trap, if you fall for it the first thing the salesman will do is offer you a free roof inspection. The result of which will indicate that you need major work done on your roof; in some cases the salesman might fabricate damage.

Keep in mind that most door to door salesmen are after your insurance cover, therefore the will do almost anything to make sure that the damage on your roof is enough to warrant a claim.

But remember insurance companies don’t just hand out money; they first investigate, meaning that if the ‘roof inspector’ fabricated damage, the insurance company will find out and you stand to lose your cover. On top of that if your insurer finds out that the damage was fabricated they won’t pay for the roof, meaning that you will have to foot the bill out of pocket.

The point here is don’t trust door to door salesmen, if you feel that your  roof is not in a good state hire a professional or licensed roofer to inspect it and fix it.

How to protect yourself from scammers

Arming yourself with knowledge is the best protection you have against scammers; if your roof has problems the first thing to do is look at it yourself, after that start looking for reputable contractors in your area. Here you can get recommendations from neighbors, friends or family, but don’t hire a contractor just because someone told you to.

What you should do is get recommendations then check the BBB (better business bureau) website, yelp, Facebook or any similar website. Look at with previous clients are saying and come up with a list of at least three contractors.

Narrow down the list by interviewing the roofing contractors remember you are looking for experienced, licensed contractors only preferably one who has insurance.
