BELIEFS


Beliefs are our software; they dictate our actions. Take the business of being assertive. You can go on all the assertiveness training available to you but if you don’t believe that you have a right to be assertive with, say, your manager, guess what?You’ll remain passive. 

 And the poor results that you get will certainly reinforce your initial belief of “there’s no point in being assertive; my manager always wins these discussions”. 

To be assertive – or to develop any skill – we need to work on our beliefs first. In the business world, we are surprisingly late in coming to capitalize on the psychology of our effectiveness. Now let’s get a little more clarity. There are two kinds of beliefs


Firstly, empowering beliefs. Empowering beliefs help and support us. An excellent example would

be “there is no failure, only feedback”. Things don’t always go to plan.
