There are many different types of yoga available now in the United States. Mostly classes focus on increasing flexibility and toning the body. However, yoga was traditionally used as a way to calm the body and the mind to a state where a person could meditate for a long period of time. But whether you practice yoga for a stronger core or practice yoga as a meditative practice you will benefit. 


The yoga postures are called asana. There are different types of asanas, inversions, lateral, balancing, seated, standing, twisting, back bend and forward fold, restorative.
