Kenya Safaris: Traveler Tips and Precautions

You may be a seasoned traveler or a first-time tourist to the beautiful East African country of Kenya but there are always some precautions to take before you travel and also while you are there, to make your travel experience enjoyable and stress-free.

You will need to double-check the vaccination requirements and health records that the East African health authorities ask for. Apart from basic inoculations like typhoid, cholera and tetanus, if you're traveling to coastal Kenya, you may need malaria and yellow-fever vaccinations as well. If you're diabetic, or have hypertension, suffer from altitude or motion sickness; make sure that you don't take part in activities that would endanger your health and well-being. While traveling, make sure you drink only bottled water and do not eat anything that's been exposed to bacteria. Fresh fruit should always be washed and peeled before eating and it's a good idea to stay away from fresh fruit juices. Road conditions on safari tours may not be very good, so you can expect aches and pains. Sunblock creams, sunglasses and shady hats are essential.

Another important consideration is respect for local cultures and customs. Indiscriminate photography of the Masai tribes and their customs, dressing in tight or skimpy clothes in Muslim-dominated areas, etc could spoil your holiday. Take appropriate safety measures by not wearing expensive jewelry and watches, don't leave your money and valuables lying around carelessly, don't wear a waist-pouch or carry a hand-bag to hold your documents and money, or go out alone in unfamiliar streets as these could invite trouble. You don't really need much cash on hand while on safari, since the tour package has already been paid for. Some money for tips and emergencies would suffice.

Remember to take only soft luggage which is convenient for safari vans and for small aircraft transfers between different lodges/game-reserves.

If you're a photography enthusiast, make sure you don't offend the locals by snapping them without their permission. Taking photos of official buildings, military bases, prohibited areas could also land you in trouble. Protect your cameras and valuable lenses and equipment from dust by carrying them in dust-bags while on safari.

Shopaholics would do well to realize that game-skins, trophies, elephant-hair and ivory artifacts are banned items in Kenya and you could get into trouble if you purchase them.

While on safari, it is important to pay attention to your guide's instructions. Children should be monitored and indulging in foolhardy behavior like stepping out of the vans or teasing animals can cost you your life. Venturing out at night from your campsite can be extremely dangerous.

Stay safe and enjoy the experience!
