Allergies of the Eye

Eye allergy season, isn’t yet over. Eye doctors find that most patients with eye irritation will have one of the three major conditions.

Blephritis – this is the inflammation in eyelids, particularly at the lid margins, particularly associated with low grade bacterial infection or a generalized skin condition. This can occur in two forms – anterior and posterior eyelid inflammations.

Around seventy percent of dry eye patients have Blepharitis.

Dry Eye – this is the result of decreased production of fluids from the tear glands that destabilize the natural tear film allowing it to break down rapidly and create dry spots on eye surface. Any imbalance in the substance that makes up the tear film will also cause dry eyes. Treatment of dry eyes aims to restore the normal tear film and minimize dryness, blurred vision and discomfort.

Conjunctivitis- Also referred to as pink eye, this is an allergic disease that is characterized by redness and inflammation of the membranes covering the white part of the eye and inner parts of eyelids. These membranes react to wider range of bacteria, allergy provoking agents, viruses, irritants and toxic agents or the underlying diseases in the body. Viral and Bacterial Conjunctivitis are common in childhood, but these can occur in individuals of any age.
