This tribute on the event of the fiftieth anniversary of his premature and tragic demise was compiled by a gaggle of Outdated Guildfordians for whom the ministry and life of the Rev’d Harry Hyde was an excellent influence; in so doing they acknowledge the Obituary by D. R. B., The Swan, December, 1962, and Tall Tales by T. A. G. Hungerford.This occasion was held final Friday 5th August, with students from all courses working laps collectively on the school oval in the sunshine, a nice change after all the current rains. The scholars all appeared to benefit from the enjoyable environment of the run with music taking part in and even Goofy the Disney Character turning as much as take part. Due to the efforts of members of the P&C there were free giveaways of lip balm and wrist bands and an icey pole at the finish to chill all the runners down in addition to items of orange to suck on in the course of the run.
But Harry Hyde had not, as yet, found his niche, and left the wheatbelt to go to the United States the place in 1951 he turned Chaplain at St George’s College, Newport R.I., Rector of St Columba’s, Middletown and Inspecting Chaplain to the Bishop of Rhode Island within the Episcopal Church of the United States. He taught Sacred Research and Arithmetic at St George’s and he was there described as being “endowed with uncommon non secular sensitivity and possessed of a most participating sense of humour”. We now have lost a buddy. Don't mourn for him, just for ourselves, for we're the losers, not Harry Hyde.
