Introduction

Your quest will lead you deep into the ocean. The ocean is home to many different creatures. All of these creatures possess their own characteristics.

The academic standard for this lesson is 3.3.10A which states “Explain the structural and functional similarities and differences found among living things. Identify and characterize major life forms according to their placement in existing classification groups.”

You will learn more about four different ocean animals. You will see how they interact with other ocean animals, and you will see how similar these four animals are to each other as well as how different they are.

Dive into your quest!

Task

You and three of your friends landed jobs at the aquarium in Myrtle Beach for the summer. Each of you will be responsible for becoming experts on one ocean animal. The four animals for you to choose from are: dolphins, turtles, stingrays, and sharks. After you have chosen your animal, you will have to research basic information that is necessary for the well being of your animal.

You will need to keep a journal and record a daily log of what your animal eats and when they eat. You will also have to write down anything you observe about your animal.

Use the websites that are listed below to help you find the answers to the following questions:

1. What is the lifespan of your ocean animal?

2. How big in length will your ocean animal get in its life?

3. What does your ocean animal eat and how often?

4. What are some of their characteristics?

5. Does your animal have different types?

Process

Use the following websites to help you with your quest and answer the questions listed in the Task section.

After you have compiled all of your information, you will present your project to the class.
You can use poster boards, worksheets, power points, and the overhead projector to present your information. Each of you will have to speak about your experience and what you learned.

Evaluation

You will be assessed based on the information you provide to the class and how you provide it. The class needs to feel like they were there when you are telling them about your experience. Lack of visuals will result in points taken from your grade. Grammar and spelling count, and pictures of the animals are a must! The journals each of you wrote in should be brought to the presentation and can be used as a reference. Again, your job was to be an expert on one ocean animal, so you should know everything there is to know about that animal. Even though each of you did your own research on one animal, you are being graded as a group.

Conclusion

You have learned about four ocean animals in this web quest. I hope you enjoyed working at the aquarium. It was great to have all of you. I hope your experience made you want to come back again next summer and become an expert on a different ocean animal. Did you like exploring the world under the sea? If so, there is a three-dimensional video you might want to check out called "Under The Sea" that gives information about all of the ocean life. Think about everything you learned from this experience.
