The price of having solar installed in NZ is getting less each year. The lower cost of hardware and the higher number of installation companies competing for work has had a dramatic effect on the cost of an install. Ten years ago a 5kWp on-grid installation was at least double what it itoday. With the number of sun hours in certain regions of NZ solar is a very feasible option, however the uptake in installations is relatively small compared with Australia, the US and Europe. This is all about to change. As soon as the emerging battery technology market gets to a level that enables people to start storing their excess energy as opposed to selling it back to the grid at a minuscule rate the revolution will pick up pace. The solar revolution has been a slow starter here in NZ but very soon big things are about to happen.
