Introducing Dr. Maya AngelouMaya Angelou is a writer who shares hard-earned wisdom,
humorous and painful truths and powerful affirmations that urges her

to life. Dr. Angelou,s love for literature and language has led to
careers in writing and the theater. While playing the lead in the opera
"Porgy and Bess" she toured Europe and Africa. Later she played the
starring role in the "Black Heritage" television series and begin to
study dance under the legends Martha Graham and Alvin Ailey and begin
performing Off Broadway in New York City. While living in New
York she met many people who were influential in the Civil Rights
Movement. Dr. Angelou's Civil Rights WorkDr. Angelou began a relationship with Vusumzi Make, a South
African Civil Rights leader and moved with him to London and later to
Cairo, where Maya took a job as the English Language editor of The Arab
Observer. Eventually they moved to Ghana where Myra taught music and
drama and wrote in her spare time. While living in Ghana she met and
befriended Malcolm X and in order to assist him in his work, she
returned to the United States. Following Malcolm X's assassination,
Maya became involved with the work of Martin Luther King Jr. Maya The AuthorMaya became deeply upset after Dr. King's assassination in 1968 and decided to begin writing again and wrote "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings". The book became an instant success leading to University fellowships, major acting roles, and speaking engagements. The 1970 publication of this book, first in a six set autobiographical series, truly launched Maya as an author. Throughout the 70's her life was filled with a series of dramatic successes, from a Pulitzer Prize nomination for a book of poetry to the reception of multiple University degrees to an Emmy nomination for her role in "Roots". Her career successes continued throughout the 1980's and 1990's as she continued to rack up awards and honors. In 1993 she composed and delivered an original poem at President Clinton's inauguration, "On the Pulse of the Morning", continuing an association with presidents that had begun with her appointment as a Bicentennial Commissioner by President Ford in 1976.Dr. Angelou TodayToday Maya Angelou continues to be popular and successful.
